ok - before i list the settings - i had the WORST time getting the 2nd curtain sync to work - i had it set in camera & flash, only camera, only flash - here i found out it was the promaster flash cord i was using - it worked when it wanted to...

in any event - give me some feedback - i brought out some of the shadows, saturated it a bit more and added borders and watermark - shot in jpg so i was somewhat limited to editing

Great shot Mike! Did you have a diffuser on the flash? It seems just a tad hard even at -2/3. Still a great shot - just curious.

i wish i had an answer for you - i cannot recall for this shot if i had the pull out diffusor on the 550ex or not - i was using it on and off and changing the bounce angle of the flash often - i dont think any of the shots i took the whole night had it @ 90 degrees - god i luv shooting w/ flash brackets :)

yeah, I do too. I hate shooting flash at concerts, but when I do club shows like that, you just don't have a choice so anything you can do to improve the situation works for me! :) I've used flash on camera bounced, on a bracet bounced, hand held on the cord, you name it I think I've tried it all. (Though it's sometimes easier to just slip the guy at the light board 20 bucks if he cooperates for at least 3 songs, LOL)
One of my favorite techniques for club shows (when the ceiling height doesn't allow bouncing) is, I use the 580ex at 90 degrees and I turn it down pretty low and use a lumiquest mini-softbox. It gives a nice, soft fill light that blends well with the stage lighting. Even more so if you use it hand held on the cord.
