ok..so my mom's friend is having a huge Christmas party for her friends.. almost 200 people coming

there will be rides with santa on a horse carriage..and well..she wants me to do pics for the people..and sell them.. she said i can keep everything i make..as long as i give them pics by the end of the night

this is my first true photo assignment and i want to make a lasting impression

it will be at night.. with street lights nearby (im assuming).. what settings do you recommend for great pics without that bright white look you always get with pics.. i took a few pics tonight to test and they came out good.. i think.. but what do you guys shoot? whats your favorite camera setting? my flash is not the greatest.. no settings..it just flashes :(

also.. what printer do you recommend for printing on the spot? i have a cheap one that i got for free when i received my laptop (HP F380).. if im just going to print 4x6 photos..is that good enough?

any help is greatly appreicated..

thanks

What "bright white look" are you talking about? Is it the look from the street lights? If so, I would shoot with the max shutter speed to kill all ambient light. If you truly want to do this I would suggest getting a manual flash, light stands, umbrella and a way of firing your flash. If you're selling the pictures that'll help with some of the spending you might need to do. This is just with the assumption that you don't currently have the above mentioned items.

i have all you said..but she said dont get too crazy on me.. i tink just a plain old flash and a diffuser is good enough

that white look comes from the flash..that very white skin look.. not natural at all.. i shot with -2 flash exposure and i think i nailed it

thanks for your input though :)

No problem..The diffuser sounds like a good idea, but I have gotten some pretty cool images using bounced flash. Try bouncing into a mirror, wall, paper..or anything reflective!! I've been going crazy with trying to find different ways of bouncing with a flash that doesn't swivel :)
