I have been thinking of replacing my 40D for some time now, and found a D700 going for $2999 at Costco. While it will probably be somewhat of a hassle selling all of my Canon gear, I am seriously thinking about selling my gear and buying the Nikon for a $600 discount.

Not to mention, that Costco automatically doubles your camera warranty too. What do you guys think?

PS: Mods feel free to move this thread to another section, if it is not appropriate to have over here.

What would you get out of the D700 that you aren't getting from the 40D?

Full frame, better ISO performance, higher dynamic range, weather sealing, better AF.... many of the same things people looking at 5Ds as a replacement for their xxD cameras.

Seems like a great deal. Hope they hang on to that deal... I would love to add one.

Seeing as you have a number of great lenses, have you considered looking at 5D or 5D2? Croasdail outlined a number of areas where the D700 may be the way to go, but the pros and cons are highly dependent on what you shoot. Have a look at what else you'd have to buy on top of that kit.

Crossdail got it right on the money! I've been thinking of making the switch to the 5D for a long time, but I wanted to wait for the 5D Mark II and D700 to come out. Now that they are out, it seems like the D700 has more of the features I want to use than the 5D.

Hmmm.... I wish I had more money so that spending $3K would be a non-issue.

So what kind of price are you going to ask for on your 70-200 2.8 IS? LOL

Ok, maybe I am just losing it... but wasn't the D700 like 3500 a couple of weeks back? It's going for $2300 on Amazon.

I blame/thank the terrible economy!

More like the world knows what a clearly inferior camera it is! :p

So you are going to get more out of the D700 body than you will out of the 5D body.. However you are going to lose much more going from shooting your L series lens to shooting the Nikon VR series.

No, msrp has always been under 3k, just by a hair though.

What? They have different lenses... some gaps in each line and all... but Nikon glass is far from crappy, and in some cases outstanding - just like with Canon.

Now, if I had a lot of Canon glass (which I do), it would be hard to make the change. Because Nikon long glass is sooo expensive (oh and very good), I have kept my D3 for indoor shooting. Can't afford to change out my long lenses. My Canon kit is for field sports and the like. I now have a lot of very fast short stuff for my nikon. I wouldn't make a blanked statement that Nikon or Canon glass is better then the other.

24-120 is the worst lens Nikon ever built! As poor as the 18-55...if not worst

Having a lot of Canon good glass, got me the Nikon long glass when I switched.

And as mentioned amazon.com has D700 for $23$$ with 24-120 $26$$, forget Costco and tax.

the D700 at $2300 is an awesome deal - if I wasn't a Canon shooter, I would jump on that without blinking...

Will the 5D mark ii drop to around $2300 within the next few months?

do not hold your breath on that one; this is wholesale membership perks (the OP deal, not the $2,300.00 body only deal on Amazon) plus Nikon trying to continue its hold on raking in more sales with a price due to it's competitor having a fancy (pfft) video mode.

if i was into dSLRs as much as i used to be, i'd definitely have my eye on the D700 over the 5D Mark II. reasons? personal preference, FPS, high ISO performance and cost factor. reasons not? the only piece of Nikon glass i'd buy is that incredible 14-24mm 2.8 lens that can't have a filter thread and the remainder would be Zeiss MF primes. in the end, nearly as costly.

I've found that the buy / sell forum here has been a very good place to sell equipment. I sold a few L lenses, a 5D, a 30D, a prime or two, flash, etc. and felt that each was a win-win transaction.

RE: the 24-120, it's not the most acclaimed lens. In your shoes I'd grab the D700 for $2319 at BH and spend the extra on a 24-70 f2.8 if a mid-range zoom is the critical lens that you're looking for. That's such a good price for this body. I have one that bought when it was first released at the full retail and I was / am struck by the fantastic performance at that full price. I have an initial impressions post that you can dig up but a theme of that post was utter delight at how fast and accurate the camera is.

You'll see in my equipment list that I'm using a discontinued zoom that is better than the 24-120 that I picked up for just a couple hundred (of course individual copies may vary). Thom Hogan (www.bythom.com) turned me onto that particular lens and has a nice write-up of it. It's not at the optical performance level of the 24-70 f2.8 (which I'd grab if you can http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/520637-USA/Nikon_2164_AF_S_Zoom_Nikkor_24_70mm.html) but just another possibility.

Good luck.

While waiting for the 5DII I was really tempted by the D700, but now that I have the FF Canon I'm sticking with that. After all the negative things I heard about the 5DII I thought it'd be terrible, but it's a great camera. It would be a huge hassle to sell all of my Canon glass anyway.

If I weren't already committed to Canon and I wanted a very nice DSLR tho, I'd take a very close look at that deal.

They do on some electronic things but camera's are not one of them. There is one good thing Costco will do and that is you can try it for 90 days and return it if you have problems or you don't like it, no questions asked. That in it self is worth something in the camera world.

Though the 200-400 is a little $$$$$, it is a BEAUTIFUL lens.
