Hi all,
This may be a really novice question but I though I'd ask...
on a canon 450d using a canon 100mm macro lens, what size would the image taken come out as pixel wise?
can you print them off at say a1 and they look fine?

Looks like the 450D has sensor size of 4272 x 2848 pixels. The lens has nothing to do with the size of the print, it's all about the sensor size, assuming you're shooting at max image quality, and what sort of quality print you want. I believe that good quality prints should be around 300 pixels per inch (PPI), so 14.24" x 9.49". Having said that, I've also read that you can still print out reasonable quality images at lower PPI. A1 sheets are 841mm x 594mm, so the image you'd end up with would be 120-130 PPI. That might be a little low quality (image might be pixelated?). Perhaps downsize the print to 2/3 to 1/2 of that and you might still get quality that's acceptable? I believe the medium you're printing on also comes into play. Printing on photo type paper demands higher PPI, but canvas prints may be a little more forgiving for example.

Great, thanks for clearing that up for me. so no matter what lens, all images taken on my 450d will be the same size when printed at an optimal level.

Basically, yes. If you want to get a bit more technical, then a really poor lens might produce a lower-resolution image than the sensor is capable of resolving, in which case it would more or less limit the output size. But I don't think any of Canon's current lenses would exhibit that on your camera (or mine). A really dense sensor like on the 50D or 5D2 might with some of the cheaper lenses.
The 100mm macro gives one of the finest image qualities available today, so rest assured that each of your 12,166,656 pixels will look great.

HI , A bit of advice needed.
I have the canon 100mm 2-8 macro, & i feel i need a bit more magnification,
I have seen a canon EF 25 extention tube for sale, what effect would this have mounted on my 1002-2 /8 macro , would this give me more magnification?

It would give you more magnification, however IMHO the canon extenders are a bit overpriced for this purpose. I'd recommend a set of Kenko tubes, which come in a set of three different sizes which you can mix and match (most wind up using a full set). The full size will give you around a 2.5x magnification versus 1x which you are currently getting.

I can pick up the the canon for £55. I know that some of the kenkos are dearer than this . how much more magnification would the canon 25 give me?

It will give you 0.26x at furthest, 1.39x at closest focus.

You'll enjoy them. I just did a test with a ruler and I think the actual magnification with a full set of Kenkos is more like 2x, not 2.5x as I said previously.

As John said, I'd go with Kenko set, 68mm total. Here I did the ruler test he mentioned:

Very interesting read!, A bit over my head though, I shall take your valuable advice, & as john has said, go with kenko.
Cheers troy.

You won't be disappointed! Just a word of caution, be a bit careful when mucking about with all of this equipment - with the full set of tubes you've got four mount points rather than 1 with just the lens. So, the lens will jiggle a bit and probably give you a bit of a scare the first time :p. Also, you have four times the chance of accidentally touching the mount release buttons, which I have done twice and didn't notice until my aperture flashed "00". Could have ended quite badly as I was standing on a brick patio. Just keep mindful and all will be well.
