When shooting for publication, and when asked, I usually give a complimentary print or two to the subject / principle of the shoot because they are usually very helpful to me during the shoot.

Got a request for a print from a person not a principle / subject (something of his is in the pic).

The pics are highly specific to the projects and are of no other use once published, and my philosophy is: "hey, the publisher already paid for the shoot so why not give this guy a price break?" Yes, I maintain full (C) control. Any thoughts?

Hi,

I give away prints all the time... especially in exchange for a signed release.

I get all releases signed ahead of time. If this is your job, by this I mean photography people need to pay for your time and work.
This happened to me recently. I did a shoot for a salon just for pictures for their website. a few months later when I did a fashion show that the same salon did all the hair for, one of the stylists wanted images for web sharing from the show as well as the previous photo shoot. When he saw my prices he got all "wow, thats expensive"
I told him it is what it is. And believe me I give a lot a way too but to paying clients.
