Hi all
Experienced a new emotion on Saturday, ENVY.
Was at the IRB races, also there was one of the photgraphers from the local paper. He was armed with a very large white lens that made my 300mm f4 look quite puny. Talking to him I learned that it was a 400mm f2.8, that was OK, it wasn't his, and who would want to lug around a thing like that! Everything changed when he pressed the go button on his 1D. It positively purrrrrred along at its 8fps. Now I was envious.

Wow

I didn't know that you could ride those rubber boats like that!

What's the top speed?

With regards to ENVY ... Sure I'm envious ... when I look at your lens lineup

Best regards,
Andy

Here's a couple of mine from a two day event at Lorne, Vic.

The first day, the weather was very overcast, so the light was poor, but the waves were better. Second day, good light, flat conditions. Still, I got a few shots off.

Yep, that it does.. I'm afraid I'll never win that contest ! ;)

IRB's are on again this weekend at Anglesea, so I'm hoping for good (photography) conditions !

Ribs ? You mean do they have rigid structures ? No, most are inflatable only. Some do have hard hulls though. (edit: the hull being the bit below the pontoons ....I was going to say below the waterline, but it's usually out of the water ;-) )

Looks like fun. Since it is the middle of the winter here and I do not have a clue what IRB racing is about, What exactly is the goal? Is it surf/rescue training or???

Thanks

PS nice shots

Yes, IRB racing is usually used by the crews as a way of keeping in practice over the off-season (winter). Most of the events they race in are based on rescue scenarios, eg racing out and picking up a "patient" from a couple of hundred metres offshore and so on.

The training in the pics here is simply training the crew, particularly the young girl, in handling the boat in the surf, for rescue purposes. She may also be in the team that races, but it's mainly for lifesaving.

IRB's are great fun both to drive/crew and to watch.

Here is one taken recently at Woolamai of a crew doing their requalification exam.

It was a great day alround for exams. As we had a bunch of 30 or so new Bronzies go through as well. And with clean 1.5-2m swell it made it easy to manage a large group of kids for exams.

I woke up to -18F. Froze my buns off. I would rather have been at the beach:D

Those boats must be beat by the end of the season....

So youre envious of a 8fps when you own a MkIIN that shoots at 8fps?...

And I would gladly lug around a 400 2.8...

The hulls last a couple of seasons, but the motors have a pretty short lifespan ;-)

In my Picasaweb site (link in the sig below), I have an album called "When good water safety goes bad" that shows what happens when one of these boats flips upside down with the motor still running.

Check it out ;-)

The camera has been upgraded since the photo was taken, and hence the signature has changed, the photo was taken with a 300D.
From a recent competition, using the 1d2. Full sized images are 1500x1000 pixels

Competitions mean that the crews are used to operating under pressure, so that in a real rescue there are, hopefully no mistakes.

This link works, but for me, the direct links to the images all give 403's. I can track them by image name in the album and they work fine there
