Just learning and stumped by something probably quite elementary to many......
Question:
Playing with my Canon XTi with a 18-55mm 3.5-5.6 lens trying to get familiar with it.....
In manual mode I cannot get the f/ to less then 5.6. It'll go from f5.6-36.
What happened to 3.5?http://www.proudphotography.com/forum/images/smilies/cool.gif
Sorry if this seems a silly question but I am a beginners beginner.....truly...!
Thank you in advance! http://www.proudphotography.com/forum/images/smilies/tongue.gif

I think you have to be set at 18mm to get the f/3.5....when you are at 55mm the largest aperture available is f/5.6.

the 3.5-5.6 means the the max aperture vaires with the focal length. At 18mm the fastest aperture is f/3.5, but as you zoom it gets slower eventually getting to a max aperture of f/5.6 at 55mm

F stop depends on the focal length, make certain you have it set to 18mm.

The f/3.5 will only be available at the wider end of the lens. So you'll only get it when you're near or at 18mm. I'm not sure where it changes on that lens.

the 3.5-5.6 means the the max aperture vaires with the focal length. At 18mm the fastest aperture is f/3.5, but as you zoom it gets slower eventually getting to a max aperture of f/5.6 at 55mmI just want to emphasize TopGear's excellent answer in case you aren't clear on the concept. Not all zoom lenses will exhibit the limitation of your 18-55, only zoom lenses that have an aperture designation like f:3.5-5.6 or f:4.0-5.6, and the like. Zoom lenses that have only one number listed, such as f:2.8 or f:4.0 will offer that aperture at all focal lengths.
I hope I don't come across as condescending, because I don't mean to be.
