My buddy told me that I should leave my "Color Space" setting on my XSi on Adobe RGB rather than sRGB for 2 reasons.
1. I use Adobe for post processing.
2. Adobe RGB offers a larger color palette than sRGB.
I have been reading that sRGB is pretty much standard. Can someone clarify this?

1. If you use Adobe RGB for post, then starting with it is probably a good idea.
2. Adobe does not have a larger color palette. They both have the exact same number of colors. What Adobe does offer is a wider gamut meaning that the colors are spread out over a larger color space.

Do you understand how to work in a color managed workflow. If not I would suggest sticking with sRGB throught until you get a working understanding of color management.
Here is some light reading.
