580 Master 430 Slaves

I want to use my 580 EX as a master and my 430 as a slave. Would my 580 flash head be pointed straight at the subject and the 430 as the slave at teh 45' at a certain power or distance? I would really like some help? The 580 is new, and I heard is it infrared synced???

Inside the light will usually find its way to the slave sensor to trigger it, no matter where things are pointed, so long as the room isn't too large. In large rooms or outside you'll have to point the master directly at the slave, possibly zoomed. If there's sunlight falling directly on the slave sensor forget it, it won't work, or at least not reliably. I found that out the hard way.
