S60 and the flash

Having problems with the flash on my S60. When I don't use the flash - it's too dark and with the flash - my pictures always look over-exposed . A friend suggested standing further back from things and using the zoom - but is this the only solution?

You may have to adjust the flash output to make this all work. Also, what ISO are you using? Flash range is limited with ISO 50 and 100.
