View Full Version : Remote Camera - G9?

So I'm trying to think of ways to set up a remote backboard camera for basketball and I got to thinking, maybe the G9 would work for this. It has manual focus and manual settings, you can fire it remotely (from what I am reading), has a hotshoe (so I can use my strobes with it), it puts out a pretty clean file at ISO 200-400 and is small/light. An added bonus would be that I'd have more DOF to work with.
I've been thinking of getting one to carry around with me anyways, so it would be neat if this could work out. Anything I'm not seeing here? I've never used a G9, so I have no idea if there is an obvious (or not so obvious) reason that this isn't a good idea.
Or maybe I'll just pick up another 20D and kit lens for $300.
Any thoughts?

I've never used one, but one other thing to consider might be the FOV that a G9 has. Will it be wide enough for your taste?

Its has 28mm (in 35mm terms), doesn't it? I'm thinking that would be wide enough. It sounds like that is about the FOV used for a lot of remotes.
I'm also considering mounting it above center court, straight down. Since that's basically a one shot and done thing. Might be good doing that for tourneys or wrestling matches.

Get the 20D and a remote trigger via eBay for another $25. Here's the article that helped me a lot:

I've actually already got the 20D and the remote, and the magic arms and the super clamps..... :)
I was just looking for another one.
That is a great article. There's also a couple of great videos about remotes in the Special Features section of SportsShooter. That place is a wealth of information.
I'll probably just get another, that way I'll have another backup body. Just kind of thinking out loud.

cool. Just so long as you don't start arguing with yourself out loud.

I only actually say one side of the argument out loud. I then pretend like my dog is taking the opposite side of the argument.
The dog usually wins. ;)
