So after buying an 750GB external hard drive. My USB ports aren't fast enough. So with that said do I need one of these? Or do I need to buy USB 2.0 card?

^ Will this do the job if I plug it into the regular USB slots I have now?

USB2.0 should be backwards compatible?

But if he's USB 1.0 out of the back of the computer, won't that just drive the hub at 1.0 speed as well?

It can't magically create USB 2.0 can it?

Exactly right. If you don't have USB 2.0 then you have to get a plug in adapter card for your motherboard.

Here's an example: http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=USB20-FIREWIRE&cat=CCD

BTW, I have no connection with geeks.com. I just use them once in a while for parts.

It should work just fine, but be slow.....
If not you need to get a PCI card that supports USB2 (like the one mentioned above me)

Oh, reading your other thread, what sort of computer do you have, if it is less than 4-5 years old it should definitely have USB2!

Most devices are backward compatible... so it will work but just at the slower speed of USB 1 vice the fast speed of USB2 (which is much faster). I neglected to mention this in my answer....On an internal Seagate drive, a jumper that has to be set for the slower speed. I'm not sure about other drives.

In real world use, the jumper, if removed, will make no difference in your throughput. Even though Sata2 was designed to be faster than Sata1, the limiting factor is the rest of the data chain. If you do any tests you will soon realize that. With that said, remove the jumper, anyway. It won't hurt.

If you only have USB1 (real old computer) than get an add on card for USB2. USB2 is considerably faster than USB1....

USB1 is designeg for transfer rates of 12mb/sec
USB2 480mb/sec

In real life USB2 never gets close to those numbers but is still about 30x faster than USB1.

Your PC must be pretty old if it does not support USB 2.0

You will need to buy a card. the USB 2 device you note just allows more device to be attached and it will run at the speed of your USB controller on your PC's motherboard). Once you buy a USB2 card, it might be useful to get a USB 2 hub because the only ports capable of USB 2.0 will be on the back of the card. your PC ports will still run at USB 1.0

Even a USB 2 card may not be fast enough. If your external drive has an FW 800 port, you'll be better off getting a FW 800 card.

BTW, plugging in a USB 2 hub to a USB port is not going to do much to increase your speed. You'll need a USB 2 card that plugs directly into the PC expansion slots to see any speed gain.

If you have a desk top computer you will need to buy an adapter similar to the one in the link posted by AmphibSailor. Make sure you have a spare slot to install it in though. You can install it in less than an hour or you can take you computer to a computer store and have them install it for you.

If you have a laptop you can buy a PCMCIA card adapter and just plug it into the PCMCIA slot. I use the card adapter on my laptop and it is not as fast as the USB2 ports on my home computer but is it definitely faster than the USB1 on my laptop.

This is only a 10 minute job.....and that includes installing siftware!!!!!

really is very simple
