No, they are the cheapest people on earth, no pun intended. When I was shopping around for the 1D, I called and asked to see if they can give a better price, they wouldnt even throw in a $30 camera strap...........

17th just helped me lighten my bank account to the tune of a new 20D, and four lenses + 1.4 EX...
They were FABULOUS, and the prices I'd seen on the website were a bit more than what I actually paid for items... 70-200 was about 60.00 less (commented on the fact that B&H charged less), the others, while he looked up what I was asking for, he was reading aloud... and the price was a few bucks here/there less... I didn't try to interrupt him. The prices were better than B&H, and shipping/handling was cheaper. (didn't know B&H price matched - they are cheap and will not toss in so much as a kleenex!)
I rec'd my order about five days earlier than planned.
I wouldn't use my credit card as I was heading out on a biz trip, and couldn't tie up $$ on the card, so I did a paypal and gave cash, hence my calling instead of purchasing online.
Consequently, when I got off the phone, 'bout an hour later the big B&H fire story broke... ;o)

I bought my camera there as well as some of my lenses and other accessories.
Outside of being a whole in the wall location..(as opposed to B&H's willie wonka factory) they definately took care of business in a professional way.
I had a problem with one of the 4gig CF cards I bought about 2 weeks later, so I just walked back in to the salesman who sold me the goods, he remembered me (big$$ sale) and just swapped the cards after testing it briefly without a receipt.
Now B&H is a fantastic shop also, no question about it, but a personal touch like that is hard to achieve when your their size.
17th Street Photo = 2 thumbs up

I spent over $4000 with 17th Photo. They are the best. Low prices, and friendly service. GREAT FAST shipping, every order I have gotten within 3 business days or faster.
They fedex everything.

I needed to do some shopping last time I popped into New York, and it turns out they were the closest store to my office, so I walked over. Aside from their store itself being a little sketchy (or at least the building they're in), I was thrilled with the service & prices. Staff in person was knowledgable & friendly, and fortunately they also had prices as good or better than anywhere else I could find.
No high-pressure sales tactics, and the sales guy spent plenty of time helping me understand the differences between units I was thinking about (I didn't have time to research 480EX vs. 580EX flashes ahead of time, and of course the 580EX won the battle to go with my 20D). The flash and a lens I bought were in perfect condition out of the box.
Will definitely visit again next time I'm in town and need to buy equipment without my wife finding out :)
