All rise,
So now that you guys have put the D30 thru the paces, has the jury reached a verdict?
Love it, hate it, cost too much? (its only money $$$)
Not good for low light? (say it ain't so Joe)
Can you manual focus in low light? (duh)
Action? (is it fast enough to shoot a box turtle race?)
Noise reduction? (work as good as the G1?)
Iso? (does D30's lowest iso compare to iso 50 on the G1?)
Case closed?

Mr. Jury Foreman,
My votes are below:
>>Love it, hate it, cost too much? (its only money $$$)
Absolutely love it. Sure, I'd like it to be $50., but it represents an amazing value for the money, given the image quality and compared to other digicams.
>>Not good for low light? (say it ain't so Joe)
Good enough for me. I've taken several hundred shots of pretty low light (school productions) without major focus problems. The ability to kick it up to ISO 1600 (with the noise increase) is amazing. I find myself adjusting the ISO all the time -- basically, instead of just shutter and aperture I now have three variables for exposure control.
>>Can you manual focus in low light? (duh)
Yup - viewfinder is plenty bright. Of course, this is very lens dependent -- the 50mm 1.4 lens is a LOT brighter than a lens with a smaller max aperture.
>>Action? (is it fast enough to shoot a box turtle race?)
I've captured some real fun shots of my sons running at full speed through a fountain -- tack sharp -- I'm not a pro sports photographer, but it works pretty darn well. I also had a great experience using it at my son's indoor basketball game. And, of course, there's always manual... :)
>>Noise reduction? (work as good as the G1?)
Noise reduction only kicks in on longer exposures, so I haven't played with it much yet. From what I hear, it works great. However, the raw unfiltered capture, especially at ISO 100 and 200 is amazingly noise free even without the noise reduction stuff kicking in.
>>Iso? (does D30's lowest iso compare to iso 50 on the G1?)
No. The D30 blows the G1 away...no comparison. I'd be real interested in Pekka's opionion, but it seems to me that ISO 200 on the D30 is about equal to ISO 50 on the G1. Canon has done an amazing job with the sensor on the D30. Then, of course, you also have to add all the factors that come with being able to use a wide variety of lenses. The D30 is just in a different class. The G1 is a great camera for its class, but the D30 is much better for more serious photography.

>>>Love it, hate it, cost too much? (its only money $$$)
Love it. I haven't shot on film since.
>>>Not good for low light? (say it ain't so Joe)
Bought a speedlite (420EX), makes it great for indoors and outdoor fills. I *DO* notice I underexpose more than my film-based SLR, but on the whole it's a much better experience.
>>>Can you manual focus in low light? (duh)
Of course :) A lot of times, you have to since the focus hunting gets annoying in low light. It's still better than some of my other camera's low-light hunting though.
>>>Action? (is it fast enough to shoot a box turtle race?)
Sure... I've taken some great action shots, even with low ISO numbers...
>>>Noise reduction? (work as good as the G1?)
I never use it on-camera. I use Quantum Mechanic (www.camerabits.com).
>>>Iso? (does D30's lowest iso compare to iso 50 on the G1?)
My previous camera was a G1. Hated it. Color was always off, and the picture quality just can't come close to the D30's.
>>>Case closed?
Yep. The defendant is free to go. :)

Love it. It cost a lot but when you have the thing on your hands and use it, you forget all those trivial matters like money :)
Not good for low light? (say it ain't so Joe)
Well, to me D30's low light performance is excellent. See my other post about ITEC 2001 photos.
Can you manual focus in low light? (duh)
With 2.8 lenses or faster: easily.
Action? (is it fast enough to shoot a box turtle race?)
Available shutter speed: 1/4000 is enough.
Focus hunting on moving subjects: could be faster and more intelligent.
Noise reduction? (work as good as the G1?)
Yes.
Iso? (does D30's lowest iso compare to iso 50 on the G1?)
ISO 50 on the G1 compares to ISO 200-400 on the D30.

we've come a long way, baby, to get where we are today.
Except the lousy focusing remains.

..."You've got your own cigarette now baby, you've come a long, long way"
If you're old enough, you remember the commercial.
More on topic, it's pretty amazing how fast digital has taken over and outshined film in nearly every way.
And really, auto focus has improved as well. A great deal, actually. One roll of film through my Elan II is all I'd need to convince myself that the newer cameras definately outfocus the older ones.

Just think what we will be nitpicking about in 8-10 years. only iso 200,00 only 16fps, only 512gb cards.

Well it's gotten a lot better in 7 years, maybe time to trade that D30 in and stop complaining. :p :p :p :p

This is funny. Seven year-old thread has more posts in 20 hours than it garnered in 18 days when it was originally posted.

It's funnY!
Amazing how questions and comments about the "new Canon D30" sound so much like questions and comments about the latest gear!

My Dad's old D30 got me in to this 3 or 4 years ago and I swear some snaps I took with it and the nifty 50 were shot on film. The D30 had a great 'look' to the image output. Slow as Hell though :)

trying to stay relevant on a canon forum after you've dumped your canon gear can have that effect :D.

A good sign--possibly this digital craze may catch on. ;)
