My Christmas gift to myself has largely been unused because of the weather and lack of interesting things to photograph. The last few days I've finally gotten around to searching out some birds to practice on. There's definitely a learning curve using +500mm. Here's a few of the better ones while waiting for spring and more targets...

Thanks for your kind comments!
Hopefully I can get to see some rarer birds this coming summer,
but Mallards and the like are at least good practice. :)

FretNoMore, excellent shots! That 500 is on my wish list. Here in the US we call that first duck a ringneck, although I've never seen a pic that good to my knowledge. As others have said, that mallard hen is an incredible shot. Looking at the pic it looks almost as if it may some sort of cross breed. The bill is a little unusual shape, and the coloration is different. Thanks to that lens you can see those things! Well done and keep them coming.

Again, thanks for your comments! :)

Some replies:

I'm bad at judging distance but I'd say the birds were somewhere between 10 meters (Mallard) to perhaps three times that away (first shot is cropped quite a bit).

The Gull shot was at 500mm, for the others I used the 1.4x extender. I can only say I'm really happy with the quality of the Mallard photo given it was at 700mm.

I'm pinching myself really, I'm lucky to be able to use this gear. Now I just need to live up to the potential and capture something more interesting than Mallards...
