This is probably the stupidest question I have ever asked but it here it goes. If I'm in Manual mode with my 20D and I set the shutter speed and aperture just how I want it based on a reading from a hand held meter does the metering mode on the camera have any effect? For example: If I change to different metering modes on the camera such as Evalutive, Partial, Center weighted, Does this effect the exposure at all? If I take take the time to dial in the exposure myself what effect does your choice of metering modes within the camera have? I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but I had an argument with a friend the other day about this. I was positive that once you set the camera manually the metering mode choices did nothing. Please enlighten this crazy boy!!

If I am reading your question right, the answer is no.

I agree with Harry, the metering mode isn't used when you're in manual mode. All it does is set the exposure time to get a correct exposure, you've done that manually.
I think the Americans need the most metering help, they're still on those old feet and inches type measurements :p ;)

Thanks so much guys. That is what I thought. He has me thinking the the choice of metering mode had something to do with the final exposure even after you made your own adjustments. It sounded crazy to me but hey, I still have lots to learn.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the metering is just there to show you what the camera thinks you're going to acheive based on the settings you give it.

If i'm understanding what you've written, I don't think that's quite right. The metering tells the camera how long to leave the shutter open, the metering mode gives it hints on what part of the scene to expose for.

In fully manual mode, the camera does as it is told, i.e. if you enter 1/200 sec and f5.6 it will do this.
However, it will still show in the bar chart display how it thinks the shot is going to be exposed based on those settings. Whether changing the metering mode affects this display, I don't know, but I would suspect it does.
I'm talking about on the 10D, so suspect it is the same on the 20D.

If you're using a handheld meter to determine your exposure settings, you could care less what your camera meter is telling you. You set your shutter speed and aperture to whatever your handheld meter tells you and if the camera meter doesn't agree you will see that in the viewfinder, but it won't alter your settings....that's why they call it "manual"

i am amazed at the vast amount of confusion here :) all that money and people dont even know how the meter works...
in M all the meter does is tell you what it thinks of your settings.

I could not believe the difference in my 300D's meter and my Minolta VF at f/8 and various ISO settings. Needless to say that I only shoot in manual mode with my handheld flashmeter.

Not everyone who owns these cameras knows everything about them. that is why we are asking these questions..

Yes brother dont worry about it. Now that I think about it, it really wasnt that stupid of a quesion after all !! LOL.. My better judgement obviously told me that in M mode your setting overide the metering of the camera. But, I have a dear friend who tried to tell me that the camera's metering mode whould still try adjut the exposure. I know he doesnt know what he is talking about! It's no biggie. Thanks for everyone taking the time to put yet another issue to rest!! I'm sure it wont be the last..
