Do you think the new DG lenses announced by Sigma will devaluate their older non-DG counterparts, even though the difference is probably nothing more than a special lens coating to make them "digitally enhanced"?

I was just about to pull the trigger on a Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX HSM, but knowing that I am only buying this to hold me over until I can spring for a 70-200 f/2.8L IS, I thought I'd better get a 2nd opinion on this first. I'd hate to turn around and have to sell this for $300-400 because no one wants the non-DG anymore after the newer models are released.

I don't believe they've announced any new DG lenses for 5 months. They've announced a few DC lenses which can only be used on 1.6/1.5 crop factor sensor cameras. DG lenses are useable on all SLRs including film. The DG means designed with digital in mind but is for film and digital.

I for one think that lenses that only work on a certain sensor size are worthless, and I won't buy one! I have an EF-S kit lens but I had no idea if I was going to like photography the way I have and it's more than worth its price for the focal range.

I wasn't refering to the DC 1.5/1.6x lenses, but at PMA Sigma also just announced adding the DG "Digitally optimized" suffix to many of their current lenses, including the 70-200 f/2.8 EX DG HSM, 80-400 EX DG OS, 100-400 F4 EX DG HSM, and 6-7 others. This could be nothing more than a new sticker on the lens, but it could be enough to make people believe they would be buying an inferior product by buying the non-DG version.

The two determining questions which will lead to answer to your original questions are: Will there be actual differences on the DG versions of the lenses? Will people be lured into thinking the new are better than the old versions whether or not there are actual differences? I would think yes to both of these questions. Conceivably, the old versions will have lesser second hand values. But by how much? Nobody knows, because only market force will and can determine that. I would use wait-and-see approach.
