Magnesium alloys are metal of choice for many camera body panels for many reasons. Here are some of them:
- very favorable strength to weight ratio, better than aluminum
- relatively easy for precision casting and metal forming
- high corrosion resistance under normal use
- excellent medium for many types of surface finishes (anodizing)
- very good dimensional stability
Titanium is the top choice for its superior strength. It is much more expensive than aluminum or magnesium thus found mostly in limited edition cameras, namely Leica and Contax brands. Titanium finish is not the same as solid Titanium.
It relates mostly to surface finish, not the content.
I believe W300 is made of stainless steel with "titanium" finish. which is not at all bad.
Cheers
