View Full Version : Video Problems w/ Canon PowerShot S5 IS

I am posting to ask the help of the forum members. I am a novice camera operator and hopefully a more knowledgeable member here can offer a solution. In September, I bought a Canon PowerShot S5 IS. I almost exclusively use the camera to take video clips. I try to take clips with the highest resolution possible 640x480 30FPS.

I have found an issue when I attempt to record these clips. I watch the clip through the viewfinder screen as I record it. When I start to film, I have noticed that the camera/frame sometimes jumps or skips. I have uploaded a clip in the below link showing a clip that does this skipping.

I have looked through the instruction manual for the camera with no success. If anyone has any idea how I can correct this problem I would appreciate it. For those who are familiar with this camera, would the auto focus, auto focus beam, or the IS mode cause this problem? I have noticed this problem occurs when there are objects in the fore ground and the background, depending on the shot.

Hopefully an experienced photographer will look at the video clip and be able to help.

I have never seen anything like that before. I have an S2 IS and never had that problem... Sure you dont have a twitch?

Thanks for the response. No, I don't have a twitch. The camera does this whether or not I am holding it, or it is set up all by it's lonesome untouched on a tripod. I do not know if some sort of auto focus thing is causing it or what?

Does this appear like a hardware issue where I would need to return the camera or send it in for repair?

I am continuing to look into the image stabilization mode. I suspect this may be the cause. If anyone has experienced this problem and solved it, any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Take it back in now, for warranty work.
