So I haven't taken a lot of pics with my camera and just got the 50mm 1.8. Was hoping to get a little judge of how I'm doing. Took this pic at a local duck pond. f1.8 iso 400 1/400 First time post a pic here hope I do it right.

It's not a bad picture. It looks like a fun opportunity to take some photos. I would have liked to see you get in closer to the duck, but it can be difficult with a 50mm not to scare the little quackers away. I like the amount of blur in the background; it seems about right to me. I like being able to see the form of the other ducks, but they're not so distracting either. It is obvious what the subject of the photo is. I think you would have been well advised to aim a little higher and to the right. Two reasons, in my opinion:
1) The foreground doesn't add much to the photo in my opinion. There seem to be more ducks in the water. That context would have made it a more interesting photo.
2) The little guy behind the subject seems a bit eager to get into the shot, so I would have preferred to leave him out completely.
A 3rd reason may be suggested by others why you should aim higher and to the right - Rule of Thirds. Some might tell you that you should not center the subject in the frame... I don't think that's always relevant and I'm sort of ambivalent about that here.

I agree with Reign...... nice picture but I would put more emphasis on the lone duck, mainly for the Rule of Thirds in this case.

I had played around with a crop of it a little and got pretty close to what you cropped it. I have very little experience with photography and none with editing. Ya I was trying to get closer to him but at this point he started to run away so I had to take a quick snap. Thanks for the comments.
