Hi,

New user of d SLR.

I want to stop the action outdoors and indoors for basketball, soccer, baseball, and maybe snow cross racing.

What settings for the above lense?

compare indoors and outdoors.

Thanks!

av mode lowest f stoop and 1600 if indoors,

then upgrade to a 85mm 1.8 ASAP

Indoor basketball might be pretty rough with this lens. I have found that you need a faster (2.8 or 1.8) lens. Like kawter2 said get teh 85 1.8, for the price it is VERY hard to beat.

The apature is key, the 85 1.8 is great (as mentioned a few times already). Depending on the lighting, with the 1.8 setting you can get away with ISO 800 and still get fash shutter speeds. I also find setting the custom function #4 to setting 1. This puts the auto focus on the "*" button and leaves just the exposure on the shutter button. You can keep the "*" pressed during rapid fire, or not, to better control the focus - which is important with the narrow depth of field shotting at F1.8

Use Cfn. 4-1 to put AF on the * button and separate it from the exposure, and use AI Servo.

Which mode to use? AV or manual?

So, basically since this lense is only able to go to f4, I wont be able to get a fast enough shutter speed to stop the action even in iso 1600?

Maybe outside on a sunny day I could do it due to the better light?

It works fine in good light out of doors. I have shot in the 'sports' mode a few snow sledders and tubers coming off of jumps and making a big crash. It will or can freeze the action and I think they look quite nice.
