Took these two of my boy Glen today. Which do you prefer and why?

Number two is better. The dog isn't as centered , he looks very interested in something, you can see more of the face

I agree, the second is better, you can see both eyes and it looks a little sharper to me as well. I'd crop it down a bit more too. Beautiful dog you have there!

An image like #1 would be interesting in a studio setting in b/w where it would look like a posed formal study of the profile. As a candid, #2 is better.

Nice shots.
I would also encourage removing his collar for photos, and if these are posed you might get a bit further away from the background, or open up the lens a bit more (if possible) to blur the background some more.

Number two---looks more natural and more like a dog I would like to meet.

I prefer the first picture, he has the intense BC look like he is stalking a prey with his head pressing forward. The second one I don't like the left eye, and he looks like he is fearfull. BC are intense, and the second picture to me looks uncertain with a bit of toung sticking out. JMO
I love the herding breeds!

You can see more of the face and the dog appears more intent ready to spring.
