A coworker has asked me to do some portrait work for a Christmas gift for her husband. This will be my first portrait shoot with my 1D. Any tips on what settings I should use, esp with re: to what focus point to use?

I shoot the 5D, but have shot other cameras as well and I set my AF point to the center one. As far as other settings... it depends. It depends on a LOT of things.

I think you need to read up a bit more on the basics of photography before attempting to do much portrait work

Use whatever focus point covers the part of the image you want in focus ;)

If he has a 1DmkII and a large arrangement L lenses I really hope that he knows the basics of photography better than he knows himself.
Still, with that being said, what do you mean portrait settings for a 1DmkII? They're the same on any camera, depending on the lighting situation... You should really know this before you aquired your artillery...
