View Full Version : sorry 5DMKII, I couldn't wait for you

As I typed, I have now got my Nikon D700 with couples of F2.8 nikkor lens on my desk.
It was the hardest decision I had to make this year, initially I pre-order a 5DMKII from our local camera shop here in NZ, was 37 on the list and moved up to 25 as some have pulled out. First 10 arrived and as expected they were gone in no times, (was hoping more ppl will pull out;)). after spoken to the camera shop friday morning again, I was informed that next shipment won't arrive till mid Jan, and they couldn't gurantee that my 25th place will gurantee a copy:(.
since i have sold the 40d and all canon lens waiting for a big upgrade for the 5dmkii (with 24-70L, and 16-35L), i have nothing for my xmas and new year holiday, which i will be spending 2 month travelling in asia. and with more bad news from the camera shop that the 24-70L is out of stock here in New Zealand, and next shipment will have an 8% price increase due to big fell of our dollars lately, and no ETA for its arrival.
so after a long head scratchin weekend, and more than 20 hrs of online searchin, i made my decision this morning and went to pick up a D700, 24-70F2.8 N, 14-24F2.8N, and a SB-900
overall I did pay a bit more than the canon 5dmkii deal i was plannin before, but at least, now i know that i can finally sleep tonite and so far from what i have seen both lens produce ultra sharp pics with d700.
the biggest "CHANGE" so far is I have to look for Nikon Forum instead of POTN:oops:, so far i havn't found any nikon discussion forum as good as POTN.

Congrats! 14-24 f/2.8? That's CRAZY wide on full frame. Enjoy the D700, it and the 1DIII are IMO the two best cameras on the market today. And post some pictures! Just because you're with Nikon now doesn't mean you shouldn't share images here and bask in some of that full frame goodness too.
Let us know how you like the camera, I have forbidden myself from trying one at a store, because when I try stuff that I like, I tend to buy it, and I know I like the D700. A lot.
Actually I was at the store playing with a 35L the other day (guess what I'm getting myself for Christmas?) and the saleslady asked me if I was getting a 5DMKII, and I said no, there's no camera that I'd rather have than my current 5D, for various reasons. Except for a D700.

People don't seem to have issues on the numerous post from people announcing that they received the 5D MKII, or their new lens.

That's a little different. Getting new Canon gear and letting everyone know first impressions, new images and their overall experience with the new Canon gear on a Canon site seems appropriate. Telling everyone that they couldn't wait for a just released product doesn't make sense on a Canon EOS equipment forum.

from a thread in forum talk:
The camera and lens sections are strictly for Canon; elsewhere we don't care what you use. So by all means, post photos taken with a Nikon, Pentax, Olympus, or other camera in the Photo Sharing areas.

ya sorry my post sounds like kind of spam, but strange i thought i would share this with fellow canon users instead of post on nikon site. since i joined potn, i didn't post very often but i certainly read and learnt a lot. readin on potn became part of my work.

It is unfortunate that you weren't able to get a 5DmkII in the first wave of shipments. It is what you wanted in the first place, otherwise why be on a waiting list. Over the past 26 years I have moved from Minolta to Canon to Nikon to Canon, but these moves were based on what met my needs at the time of the switches and what I could afford.
Good luck with the D700. It looks to be an outstanding DSLR. Between its high eyepoint viewfinder and high ISO images, I am considering it myself (along with the 5DmkII). If there were only some way I could combine the best of Canon and Nikon into one system ...

Actually I was at the store playing with a 35L the other day (guess what I'm getting myself for Christmas?)...
So when you asked whether to get the 35L or the 85L, I guess the answer was "both"? Looking forward to a follow up to that thread to see which one you end up using more.
To the OP, enjoy the D700. If it had an EF mount I'd probably own one too. The Nikon 14-24 and 24-70 are supposedly best in class, so you've got your Nikon gear off to a great start.

I haven't logged in, so take this with a grain of salt, but....
That forum seems pretty dumb to me. They let you post comments on their forum for free, but you can't post images without shelling out the $25 for the silver membership. That is pretty off putting to start with.
They have a classifieds section, but you can't access it without paying the silver membership. When I have something for sale, I would post it where I think the highest number of people possible will see it.
They have a wiki, but you can't edit pages on it unless you fork out for a gold or platinum membership ($75 min!). The pont of wiki sites is to invite as many people as possible with knowledge to contribute, so limiting that right seems totally stupid to me.
I do understand that it is a 'not for profit' site, and that they put the cash back into the community, but I think the potn way is much more open and inviting.
So... Thanks to all you POTN folk, especially the admins and the guys who set up the forum in the first place.
If you find a nikon forum that is as cool as this one, please let me know. I am sans equipment at the moment so I could still choose to go nikon. Because of POTN I am about 87% decided that a 5dII + EF lenses will be what I choose to get but I am interested in finding how the grass is over there.

Trust me, DPP>nx2. I suggest actually getting LR or similar instead, much better functionality.
And you could have just gone with BH/adorama/a dozen other places that have good prices and ship internationally before christmas. Then you could have gotten 16-35, 24-70, and a 5d instead... and saved US $1200.

The NX2 software is much better then DPP by a long shot. It works well with the Nikon images and gives you the ability to change in camera functions through the software. The only down side is how slow it is. You can't even crop in DPP.

Congrats on the D700. In my opinion, in an operational sense, you got a better camera overall. It's an awesome camera. Have fun on your trip. I wanted a 14-24 but damn, the size/shape was so goofy and weird that I couldn't do it, nor fit it into any of my bags properly. Have an awesome trip and post lots of pics!

I heard from a hardcore nikon pro user that NX2 is the only software that can 100% properly decode the RAW NEF files from Nikons. Supposedly the codec for the Nikon NEF files are a closed source.

^ adobe's got the nikon's cracked good enough that's either completely false, or at least enough so it doesn't matter.
for the record, the D700 is an awesome camera. If canon made it (or I could use my canon lenses with it) I'd be hard pressed to choose between it and the 5Dii. Both are fantastic, so use it and enjoy it.

The software that all canon cameras come with also let you change cf.n last i knew, and the old, old dpp had a crop function, so how am i supposed to know that the new ones don't
Lets also not forget that nx doesn't come with all nikon cameras only the pro/semi-pro level ones. At least 1 didn't come with them, maybe nikon caught on that people like free software even if they don't use it or need it.

wow, didn't think this was gonna make it to page 3.
i did consider ordering from b/h or adorama, but they want heaps for shippin, last time i tried was around $300 us from memory, + i need to pay another 12.5% of import duty once they landed. all add up, i would have probably pay an extra $500 more compare than buyin from local canon dealer.
i do use cs3 and LR, but i want to try nikon capture nx2 as it came free as part of my camera deal (normally rrp at $400nzd), from playin with the trial version it does have some nice features.
anyway guys, really thanks for all your input, i will post up some pics in other sections once i got myself sorted. at the same time i will aslo keep my eyes closely on the 5dmkii, and if i m lucky enough to borrow one locally i will try my best to compare them.

Congrats on the new setup!
I was playing with a D700 today as my 40D and L glass ignored me.
My wife pleaded with me to switch to Nikon but I just grinned and enjoyed the feel of the D700, I actually like the grip a little better than the 5D/5DII and my 40D.
Fact is I wont be going away from Canon but that doesnt mean I cant get some Nikon shiz too :)
My wife is the Nikon person in the house so she will claim all the Nikon equipment. :)

Like you, I have been trying to decide which system to buy into - in the UK the 5d mk2 is almost the same price as a D3 if you include a grip. D700 looks great but only 95% viewfinder coverage.
Enjoy your D700 and those lenses - if you do decide to get a 5dmk2 just put the Nikon in the post:-)

Its hit and miss. I got it with my Nikon body and seems some didn't. Depended on the batch. I believe it comes with the new bodies now though. It has many of the important functions you will find in photoshop. You can actually edit the photos with it. Not just adjust colors and tones. They give you a lot of control so you are only stuck using another editing software for heavy editing. Something you wont find in DPP.
Another thing I found in DPP with my 50D is that when shooting in sRAW modes noise reduction is not fully functional. Only part of it.

Yeah, me too, Ebay Cashback convinced me to buy these two instead of saving for the 200-400F4 i've been wanting, so they arrive today and my piggy bank will have to do a lot of recovery before the 2x4 becomes mine! They arrive today and I will have 2/3 of the Nikon Holy trinity =) I still want a 5D Mk2 as well tho for my canon lenses which are waiting patiently, my 20D is being used by a friend with my 17-40L so it's not being wasted.

Don't go running off, just because you drive a Nikon!
In the American car racing business, the drivers will sometimes change teams, driving a Ford one year, and a Chevy the next year. Doesn't change their basic driving skills just beacuse they change teams!! So hang around, we'd like to hear about life on the other side to keep us up to date on the "outside" world . . .
