The sepia version she did today is even cooler, but I totally agree, canvas worthy.

Thanks everyone! I'm going to print large and hang it in the living room! Love a classic concept with my kids plugged in. ;)

Eugene Smith is smiling up there in Photographer Heaven and wondering if you have infringed upon his copyrighted "A Walk to Paradise Garden" from 1947, which was issued as a postage stamp and is one of his more famous works.

Oh goodness, I just googled and it is quite similar. :D

I wouldn't worry, as long as you aren't marketing it. There are certain--almost--universal themes that pop up in art and literature. Sometimes you have a brilliant idea and find that it's been thought of before. They say it is unconscious copying from your older, buried memories. But I know for a fact that sometimes you just do something that has you in awe of how original you are and "BOOM" someone breaks the news--but you never read or saw whatever it was before and have no idea why you thought of it.
Truly I've been there, done that and been laughed at!

I read a fairly long history of Smith, in which he discussed the making of his shot. It was not a snap of the moment. His work covering the 2nd world war left him quite depressed and he almost left the field, but an idea came to him when he watched his children going to play and he set about to capture it--waiting until he had the right light and the right angle. Sort of the same thing when you go birding, you scope out where the bird likes to hang out and you set up when conditions are right and wait. Sometimes you get the bird and sometimes you don't.
Your shot is almost there. The one thing that bothers me is the branches running into the taller child's head. Without that it would be more pleasing. Perhaps some blurring of the background to separate the tones.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll play around with it.
This definitely wasn't a preconceived shot. We were just walking from Grandma's house to Great Uncle's house and they looked too darn cute not to shoot.

I feel like the kids are too centered and visually I am pulled toward the tree. Many of the spots are awfully hot as well. Maybe less contrast might work.
Of course I'm being awfully critical, but as long as you've got kids that are willing to be that cute together, you might as well try to perfect it.
