View Full Version : Wide Angle lens for Wedding?

I have a few weddings booked this summer and I am thinking I need a wider angle lens than 28mm.
What would you guys suggest as a good wide angle lens for weddings?
I am thinking the Tamron 17-35, Canon 17-40, or possibly the Canon EFS 10-22

What would be most useful in a wedding shoot?

Thanks

I think the 17-40 might be best.
I haven't yet heard the same amount of praise for the Tamron 17-35 that I've heard for the 28-75.

The Canon EFS 10-22 might be too wide for many shots, unless you have really large crowds.

Maybe take a look at the Tokina AT-X 17/3.5 Pro as well.

Best regards,
Andy

I am quite happy with my latest toy: EF16-34mm! :) And I use it for group shots as well as for architecture. It is crisp sharp and bright.

Yes, but they cheated you out of a full millimeter versus the original Canon EF 28-35/2.8

Just kidding, of course.
It certainly is a great lens, but at a price.
A comparison to the 17-40 can be found here (http://luminous-landscape.com/reviews/lenses/canon-17-40.shtml).

Best regards,

The 17-40 L is great for group shots at weddings, but I use my 24-70 L for most of my wedding work.

^^^ another vote for the 24-70 f/2.8L

That's my other idea, sell my 28-75 and buy a 24-70 and use it only.

If your already at 28mm, then a 24-xx wouldn't do that much more for you with big dollars invested. Your better off with the 16-35mm 2.8 L unless cost is a factor. Then consider a simple 20mm or 24mm prime lens.

You might consider a flash upgrade also. Just a quick thought.

Yes I am planning on getting a 580 EX sometime soon.

There is no doubt that the 24-70 will be a better lens than the 28-75 but they are almost the same, so you'd be making a quality jump if not a focal length change. And you certainly could shoot a whole wedding with this one lens. If you shoot available light candids you might want to think about a 100mm f2 or a 50 f1.4 as well.

The difference between the Canon 24-70 L and the Tamron 28-75 is actually pretty big. Remember that with the 1.6 crop factor it is actually a 6.4mm difference (4 x 1.6) and at that focal length 6mm is a noticeable difference.

After trying out the 10-22 in store, I am pretty sure this will be the lens I end up getting. It is WIDE!
And the test shots I took seemed really nice.
Just wish it was a tad cheaper or an "L" for the price.
The 17-40L is actually cheaper than it.

For shooting large family groups at a wedding, I have never had to go any wider than 20mm (on a 1.6 body).

One advantage of going wider than that, like 16mm, is that you can move in closer to the subjects. Moving in closer gives you the advantage of moving into a closer flash range. The disadvantage is that with some flash units, you won't get the illumination spread out evenly enough to cover an extremely wide shot.

Well after using it, I am sure that I won't use the extreme wide angle for weddings, but I will use it for other photography like landscapes and fun stuff.

AND the 10-22 is extremely sharp at the 22mm end... I would think the 17-40 would be too much overlap to justify it over the 10-22. You shouldn't use 10mm for weddings to be sure, but you'll love it from 15mm+

I use my 17-40 for all of my group shots at weddings. It is a great lens for wide shots. I go to my 28-70L or 24-70L for my shots of the bride and groon and bride only. The 24-70 can handle all but large groups.

Can you afford the Canon 24/70 L AND a Sigma 12/24 (or 15/30)?
This might be the best non-EFs pair of lenses for your work.
Don't forget that these Sigmas are way darker, though.

Sigma has the 18-50 2.8 thats fairly priced and is much faster than the lenses you are looking at. In a very very poorly lit church I would want the fastest glass I could afford. I have red some reviews of this lense and they seem pretty fair, not a super-peformer but good to very good images.

24-70mm is the way to go. Anything wider will start to distort on the edge.
