Hi, I'm new to this forum and just received a 20D for my 30th birthday. I was only expecting the digitial rebel but she really outdid herself. I believe it came with the 18-55 lens. So, what other lens do I need? What about an external flash? Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!
Chris

extrenal flash will really come in handy. Congratulations! You are going to be a happy man. I got a zoom lens 28-300 and it covers a wide range for me.

This is only a suggestion, but I really think you should spend some time with the camera before worrying about new lenses. After a while, you'll recognize which direction you have to go so you can make a more informed decision.

Chris,
welcome to the forum!
Belmondo is absolutely right ... spend some time finding out how you like your new camera, and what other lenses and flash you might need.
In addition, don't buy anything before reading the forum and asking others what they think about it.
We are here to help
Generally, you'll get pretty good advice here. There are some lenses where the forum opinion will be quite unanimous, and others (e.g. Dante's 28-300 lens) where you will encounter extremely varied opinions  ... some people like them, some hate them, all for different and potentially very valid reasons.
So do your homework and have fun with your new toy
A good place to start reading is the 'EOS Sticky' on top of the page.
Best regards,
Andy

Nice wife!! Congratulations......I concur with everyone. Get used to your camera and then decide what type of photography is your passion.....i.e: macro, people, wildlife, sports etc. This decision will dictate which lens will be most useful for your next purchase (i.e: short or long focal length, prime or zoom).
Good luck!! Have fun.....

Nice job on the birthday present. I just got the 20D myself. It still has many features I don't even know about yet. Lucky thing I found this forum. Although I new I would be getting the camera, I didn't know what lenses. I talked to many of the photography stores and combined a list. I ended up getting the 17-85 kit and the 70-200 2.8f IS USM. I also got the 580EX flash. I have a lot of pratcing to do, but I fill my two lenes will work in a lot of situations. I guess it is like the folks have stated, it depends on what you are looking to shoot. Good luck with the new gift!

you are going to love that new toy.
when i ordered mine i went with the kit lens of course. along with that i did the nifty fifty. which is 50/1.8.
at the moment i am borrowing a friends tamron 75-300 so i can get an idea of what zoom i will want/need for what i shoot.
i enjoy shooting racing. getting into sports as well. so fast zoom is a must.
i also enjoy other things.
so i figured i would take a couple classes. do some practicing and playing and saving whilei figure out the camera and what glass would work best for me and my wallet.

Hello,
I'm new to this forum. You are a lucky husband right there. My 10D was my birthday gift...by myself almost 2 years ago... ans still happy with it. I took some classes and get some lens : 20mm Sigma, 28-135mm IS Canon,100-400mm IS Canon and lately, I just get 85mm 1.8F Canon to work with portrait and wedding photography.
Ciao !

Now you need to get her a 20 D for her bday, and when she gets bore of the camera, you will have 2. Heheheee. :p
I would suggest to get a few 1 gig or 2 gig memory sticks and extra batteries over the flash and a new lens, but definitily get the canon 50mm f1.8.
Like every one else said, wait until you know which direction you are going then buy the lens. But you can never have too much memory or batteries.

I have had my 20D for 3 weeks now but I poured over the information in this forum for a couple of months before that. By the time I was ready to get my camera, I knew what lenses I wanted to get and ordered them within days of getting the camera. I have been happy with my choices so far and as I am still learning the camera, I have shot about 3 GB of pictures. I have adapted to the lenses and manual focus far better than I ever thought I would; it is so much fun to use. You will learn oodles of great info here at the forum...welcome and looking forward to seeing 'your stuff'!

Hello, I'm new to the board so play nice! :D
My wife bought me my 20D for Christmas, but I have yet to go have any real fun yet. I work graveyards so I sleep during the day during the week. As for the weekends, here in East TX we have had rain and clouds almost every weekend since CHRISTMAS! I hope you have as much fun with yours as I plan to have with mine!
