Hello to the forum,
Just picked up a Canon XS10 IS the other day. Am going to the Bruins game tonight and will be sitting 2nd row balcony. Hoping to get a couple good shots with the new hardware. I am definitely an amateur, coming over from a Sony point & shoot. I have a couple pics that I am pretty proud of and will be posting them when I get a chance. For now I was hoping for a little advice on my shoot tonight. Like I said I dont really have much experience, so should i just stick with the auto mode for now until i have some more time to play with other modes? or should i dive right into manual and start playing with white balance and shutter speed and all that jazz. Also, the "F" setting i keep reading about. What exactly does changing that value do?

I just signed up and am from Boston too. I'm looking forward to pick up a lot of good tips and info from this place because I'm learning about photography as well.
I use the glossary at dpreview.com - don't know if you've seen it, but it's a good intro to many of the terms and functions.

Well, with most point and shoots, I don't think you can control the "F" setting, aka, aperture. This is how much light the lens lets it, this is more of a concern with DSLR/SLR camera/lenses, rather than point and shoots.

Except that the XS10 IS is not a point-and-shoot digital per se. It gives up very little to mid-grade DSLRs in terms of manual setting capability. I find I use my XS10 IS more than my EOS 40D. It's simply more flexible and I don't have to carry around any additional lenses.
You can adjust the aperture setting on the XS10 IS. Rotate the mode dial to Av and use the control dial to set the aperture. The camera will then select the appropriate shutter speed. You can set from F2.8 to F8.0.
I would suggest that the original poster invest in a monopod. Despite image stabilization, when using the 20x capability of the XS10 IS, you will need a steady mount. Monopods are useful at indoor sporting events where tripods are impractical.
My regards,

Hello, I'm new to this Forum but read your post and would like to ask you, or anyone else, a question about the xs10. I recently bought one. When reading the manual, at one point I thought I read that you can select a color space, srgb or adobe 1998, the latter I would prefer, (I may have read this in my 50D manual) I have not seen color management options in any of the xs10 menus. Do you know where it hides, if it is available? Thanks, Koochers
