Another outing with the 5D. I could only stay for the first half. I had other things I had to go shoot
I think i want a 5D II as soon as they figure out what those black dots are.
Lemme know what you think.

Did you use a flash with these..........:p Very clean series Adam! Great colors and WB also. Pretty good lighting in that arena to get 16/800. #6 is pretty sweet.
Is Canon going to release a camera without any issues anytime soon
Good job Adam.

Nice shots - as always! Is the first one flip??

did you flip the first image to get the flag facing the "right" way relative to the camera? It looks weird to have "freedom hall" and "louisville ky" written backwards.
nice series though.. I'm insanely jealous of your light as usual.

Thanks. The 5D is working pretty well for me. The focus is almost always spot on with the 5D. It isnt quite as fast at the MkIII and Ive noticed that certain situations make it misfocus when using the "expanded" points, but otherwise its awesome. I saw one guy on her post some pictures of motorsports from the 5DII and he says it does a better jbo tracking than the MkIII!

Yes the first one is flipped. I liked the flag there but it took a lot away from the image with it being backwards

is this your 1st outing with the 5D with LV?
I think the 1dMKIII images looks better.
#4 and #5's focusing looks off.

I like the whites better in this set, they seem more under control. Seeing how your dealing with rim lighting, it makes sense why your having issues when rotating up toward the lights. Those were a trip at State since they are angled directly at the floor instead of straight down. 6 would be superb if you could adjust the gamma a little to defeat some of the light haze up there... nicely captured shot.

Thanks for the reply. As soon as I posted some of these, I thought of you because you could really see how the lights are setup.
Call me crazy, but I actually like the haze. I dont feel that it detracts from the picture and it reminds me of all those old pictures that Iooss (and many others) have taken in the past.

If you are going to alter the image, why not just cut and flip the flag?

Because thats not how it was.
I dont see flipping horizontally as "altering" as much as cutting out an individual object and flipping it.
The image posted is exactly as it was in real life, just mirrored.
I dont know. It may be trivial, but I try to avoid altering a single part of a photo. I also try to stay away from heavy toning (unless something is going BW).
Im just quirky like that I suppose.

I guess I don't agree. In that image, nothing is how it was. Standing in that exact spot, everything is out of place. The press box is on the wrong side, the benches, everything. There is not a single pixel that is a correct representation of reality at that moment from that point.
That's why I said if you were going to alter it, why not just alter the flag and leave everything else as it really was.
Some additional input from our fellow SS members on the subject.

Big K,
I honestly respect your opinion but I disagree. Thats just the way it is. Sorry to be so blunt about it :)
I just want to add that there are no "rules" here. Even if someone has a "rulebook", thats just their opinion. Im not looking to do this professionally. I do it because I have the opportunity, I have fun doing it, and I meet nice people.

No problem at all. If we all agreed on everything this board would be pretty boring.
If you are saying that flipping an image is less of an alteration than clipping and flipping a section, then I think your logic makes no sense.
"The image posted is exactly as it was in real life, just mirrored." Any time you have add a comma it means it is altered. Either it is exactly as it was in real life or it isn't.
If you choose to not follow journalistic standards for what you do with your images have at it. No big deal. These boards are a free-for-all. Just please don't imply to new users that flipping a picture because it looks better is any different than cutting a part of the image and flipping it.

 No problem at all, but Im still wrong, right? ;)
I feel its less of an alteration because if I told you I set up a mirror to get that shot, nobody would care. I could use real life tools in order to get that shot. However, I could not use tools in real life to flip just the flag.

These are all great!
I too noticed the mirrored first photo. I think a "backwards" flag (which IMO doesn't even exist because you see it both ways when they're on a flag pole) is alot less distracting than backward letters. They really stood out and made me stop seeing the coolness of the image and start wondering to myself..."why the heck are those words backwards?"
If you sit in those seats that's how you see the flag anyway, no?

Difference of opinion. I think the backwards flag is more distracting than the small backwards letters (which is obvious since I flipped it ;) ).
Yes; you would see it backwards if you sitting in those seats and looking straight forward.
