This seems like a really dumb question, but how do I connect my 420EX to a light stand?
Is there an adapter that allows the hotshoe connector to attach to the light stand?

The 420EX comes with a stand attachment. You attach the stand to the tripod via the tripod screw and then you slide the 420EX into the "hot shoe" of the attachment.

It does? Crap, I have had this 420EX for a few years and I don't have the original box, but I don't remember that coming with it!
Will my new 580EX come with the same stand attachment that will work with the 420?

Good question and good answer, because I wondered that myself, just never noticed the tripod socket on the bottom. Thanks PacAce.

The stand attachment is in a pocket in the plastic case for the flash. The 580EX stand will work on the 420 as well. Again, it's in a pocket in the flash case.

:confused:Check out the Bogen/Manfrotto 2905 Swivel Umbrella Adapter: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=5156&is=REG

This thing works like a charm for me. I use a Canon cable to remote the flash from the camera and mount the flash end of the cable to this adapter. Then the flash mounts in its hot shoe.

I can't remember when I bought my 420ex but the 550 comes with the flash stand in the box and it requires you to put it in the sleeve of the pleather flash case. If you lost the box and never put the stand in the case sleeve, you might be hosed. I am sure it would be easy to buy one.

Or, use duct tape. It seems to work for everything else.

I have a 420ex as well. I never checked the storage case that came with the flash until now. Sure enough there was the stand tucked into a little pocket on the inside.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I have another question about the 420ex as a slave . . . is the AF assist lamp on the 420 supposed to blink when it is in slave mode? I was just playing with the multi-speedlite setup and i noticed that the AF assist lamp was blinking.

Yes it is. That's how it tells the master that it's alive. :)

This might also be what you are looking for:

and it's not quite as pricey as the other adaptor.
