Challenge #201 - Time Exposure With Special Effects
What I'm looking for here is not just a basic 3 second exposure of city lights or something but rather an interesting effect created by taking a time exposure. This can be done during the day or night.
Lets get creative here and see if anyone can create ghosts, flying cars or whatever your imagination can dream up. Let's have a minimum 2 second exposure and see what effect you can come up with.
I will judge based on the most interesting results more than the beauty of a shot.
Have fun!

Comments:
Michael Wells - The Wizard. Michael, as usual you have yet another amazing photo. The way the subdued light is on the face and the shadows are cast truly keeps with your chosen title. The facial expression is perfect. Nicely done! Be sure to share with us how you achieved the "light beam"
Kevan_G9 - Moon's Child. Another great shot from you too. The blue hue gives your picture a wonderful cool glow. The moon shining from the top looks like it is staring down on it's "child". Well done.
Maureen Souza - Christmas Tree Lights. A very intriguing picture, like so many of your others are. You have done a splendid job of getting the exposure just right to see the interesting pattern the lights created. The zig zag at the top broken up by the vertical patterns really adds to the effect. Great shot!
tomy - Passing in the Night. Wow! That's awesome! Perfect exposure for the night sky and the buildings. The car lights do a fantastic job of adding mystique to this well composed shot. Beautiful effects!
PicBug - Christmas Spirit. Now that's a great picture! An excellent representation of your title. I like the way you can see right through her and see the items in the background. The blurring of her image, and the blank expression really accentuates the "spirit" of the photo while keeping the tree in focus. Nice!
marie - the second coming. Nice work, marie! This image takes me to a train station scene from an ancient movie from many years ago. The light shining from the tracks makes me wonder what is coming towards me. The OOF people add to the emphasis of the picture while enticing the focal point towards the light on the tracks. The blurring of the tin roof encourage thoughts of another dimension in time. Great!
Gloubiboulga - The way out ( just what I deserve… :-D ). Fascinating image! Well shot and exposed just right for a great effect. Seeing the tracks in the snow through his back is especially interesting. I like the way the light shines on the snow, both on the ground and the trellis. Your curious title is well chosen for the image. Good work! Creating a "ghost" with a single exposure is harder with digital than the old 35mm SLR's
NJdez - i80. What a wild looking effect created by driving down the road. This shot brought a smile to my face, reminding me of 25 years ago when I used to do this a lot with my old Minolta 35mm SLR. Fascinating lighting on an excellent picture!

This was a lot harder to judge than I thought it would be. All of you have done an awesome job of your take on my topic. Each photo is different in it's own way and does a great representation of what I was looking for. I can only pick one, so:
First Place: Michael Wells - The Wizard.
Second Place - PicBug - Christmas Spirit.
Third Place - tomy - Passing in the Night.
Everyone feel free to share how you achieved each of your results if you want. Congrats, and nice work to all!

fun challenge this week. thanks for hosting
i thought Maureen Souza's shot was the best "special effect" out of the
entries. at first glance it looked like an overhead shot of a city. very cool
oh, and congrats to the winners!

Sadly, some of my "oops" in the past look just like many of these 'special effects":lol:

Congratulations to Michael, Pic Bug and Tomy on their placings - all were great entries this week (as usual). Good job BobsyourUncle on a very unusual challenge.

I'm stopping with the light swinging gig; you don't know what I've been through with that photo. There was this lady, walking her dogs, who I'm certain thought I was some sort of light-swingin', weirdo, serial, mugger/killer/rapist. Hey...I'm not ready to take on that title unless I'm placing here. Nope, from now on I'm playing it safe. It's pictures of trees, ponds, sunsets and...and...and maybe bugs, coming from me.
Congrats to the winners.

lol iv been there man. great photo though...very well composed.
was the moon captured like that in the original picture, or was it edited separately?
Kevan_G9
16th of December 2008 (Tue), 12:37
That's the one part of the photo I had the most trouble with, that damn moon. First off, not too far above the bridge itself are several power/cable/phone lines, so I didn't have much uncluttered sky to play with and I wasn't keen on doing all that editing. Then I dipped into a very shallow well, looking for a stock photo of the moon and dang if my choices weren't poor. I just thought with all the talk about the moon it would be nice to include it and when I did manage to get it in place, the title just became evident. I'm not pleased with having squashed it on the border, but the moon does appear to be keeping an eye on its youngin'.
My wife was the real champ. i dragged her to this location, just before sunset and she sat in the car, up on the roadway, in the dark, for the better part of an hour, whilst I ran around in the shadows, under the bridge scaring the hell out of ladies trying to walk their dogs. I'm lucky I wasn't bitten, but for the fact the dogs were scared of me too.

Thanks, BobsYourUncle, for an interesting challenge, and for placing my entry in the winners circle. Congrats to PicBug, and Tomy, and to all who submitted photos this week. All very different, and all very, very good! The "light beam" was done by taking the lens and reflector off of a mini-mag light, so that only the LED remained. After the shutter clicked, I traced a line to my hand, and cupped both hands around the light until the shutter closed again. I think exposure time was around 12 seconds. My reactions from the home front were my wife's nearly uncontrolled laughter, and my son texting me from college to tell me he thought it was "kinda creepy"! Gotta love your family!:D Marie, I looked at your photo for awhile trying to grasp what you were after, but hadn't looked at the title yet. When I put the two together, it seriously sent a chill up my spine...I guess that would make it a seriously good photo!

Thanks for another funfilled learning challenge Bob! I too, did things I'd never done before. Sorry my model (cough cough) wasn't smiling. OOops....deep in concentration. I had a lot of fun playing with the holiday lights and the tree on this challenge. I love the effects everyone came up with, very beautiful, and I found Kevan's hauntingly beautiful, beween the background and the lights. Very cool everyone!

Actually, I found the blank expression added to the effectiveness of the shot. I think a smiling face would not have portrayed the desired effect as well. I like it the way it is.
It was really hard to pick the winners. I feel I left out some of your hard work. Every picture had it's own unique slant on the subject. Each one was interesting in a different way.

Thanks, BobsYourUncle, for the place, the comments, and for such an interesting and challenging topic for SC #201. These 8 submissions show how capable these little "G" series cameras really are, and, more importantly, they show how talented the contributors to this forum really are! Great shots all, and a salute to Michael Wells and PicBug for their well-deserved 1st and 2nd placings.
For my photo, I planted the G9 on a tripod to see how cars would look whizzing by in the dark, and luckily, was also able to record a passing bus. I used Photoshop to straighten the verticals.

Tomy, your shot I thought, was absolutely beautiful, with the lights from the cars and the buildings lit up in the night light. I have always admired shots like these, but always wonder where one "goes" to get a shot like this without being in the midst of traffic? Where were you?
tomy
17th of December 2008 (Wed), 01:21
Thanks, PicBug for the comments . . :D.
Well, I was almost in the midst of traffic, on a narrow sidewalk on a downtown L.A. freeway overpass. It was a bit unnerving at first with the cars and trucks racing by only a couple of feet away. An occasional horn blast would alert me if I and my tripod would edge too close to the traffic. I like to use the self timer with TV mode, and fire away, timing the shutter release to include trucks and busses. It just takes a little practice, and after 10 or so shots, one will likely be a keeper.

Tomy,

lol
mine had to be shot at the last minute (at the railway station ,freezing cold weather and early in the morning, darkness was just lifting..
(very romantic though ) lol
we had a break- in on Friday evening. around 6pm. pitch dark though.
house was already was in a bit of mess with people coming to stay early next week. (getting it ready for everyone)
now it was a disaster
lol ( and now I had a good excuse..why the mess )bw!
ha ha ha ha ha < > hysterical laughter
looking for cash . every drawer unended
etc etc
but none to be got
lol
lets just say they were in and out of my drawers in a flash:lol: but long enough to do damage
we arrived home in time to 'catch' them in the act , almost, but 'they got away' as they had put the safety lock on inside on our hall door and we could not get in
just saw the curtain blowing through a tiny opening when the key was turned in the lock. I had left a light on in the room but still..... thats the one they decided to get in by/ also the back door was unlocked (by them, for a quick get -a- way)
but a locked side gate prevented us from being able to get around to that
they belted out and over an eight foot wall in the back garden and onwards ..........
we were in the front porch . it all happened in a flash
later on crime squad could not get finger prints as the 'robbers' were wearing gloves
back window is still broke awaiting a full recovery lol
they had prised open the aluminium window frame
.. the window people have seen what has to be done with everything
will come soon
I have the ironing board and a ladder up against the window
the hysterical laughter is still present at the thought of that preventing anything lol :p
but at least if sleeping they will be heard coming
lol
....the third coming
(it all could so well have been much worse
very thankful it was not)
thanks Michael . I got shivers myself when I saw what you mention too
very nice that you put them together (title and photo) as thats exactly what I had meant when I posted it. along with the 'seconds' timing of the photo . was not too sure the link would be understood. I had another shot which I nearly posted but decided ..being the season that is in it .... 'way to go' ........ regardless if it was a winner or not. its the taking part
lol
Best Congratulations everyone
great shots by all
take care and have a great holiday season
:D

Kevan
It is indeed the Bonaventure on the right, Kevan . . . I'll bet you've been up there, safe from all dogs. And the photo is just a single exposure, with nothing added or cloned in.
I would say that the lower left of the image does look a bit confusing, as the photo was taken on a spot where 3 overpasses cross the 110 freeway. I was positioned on the overpass that leads to Figueroa St. . . the railing here is somewhat obscured by the passing taillights. Perched a few feet higher, we can see another overpass, one that leads into the civic center. During the 15 second exposure, many vehicles passed by . . . cars, a truck, and a bus.
Below is a multiple (double) exposure I took of L.A. many years ago:

I think the same… when my parents had a break-in last year, they needed quite a while to really "feel at home" again in their own house

Just catching up on a bit of reading, so sorry to hear about your break in Marie and thankful that a) they didin't get what they were looking for and b) you didn't manage to get in while they were in the house - desperate people do desperate things, much safer to let them take their chances with an 8 foot wall than take it out on you.
Good job you can laugh (albeit hysterically) at these things, otherwise you'd go daft. Hope you and yours still manage to put it behind you and have a good Christmas and New Year. x
