I was working in Wilmslow, Cheshire and passed this on my way home.
This is Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank Observatory, part of the School of Physics & Astronomy at The University of Manchester
Unfortunately it was getting late and the light was fading fast but I managed to grab a few frames.
For more of my pictures of Jodrell Bank click here :- http://www.neil-rice.com/gallery/list.php?exhibition=47 (http://www.neil-rice.com/gallery/list.php?exhibition=47)

Wow! That things MASSive! Great shots nonetheless......but one can only imagine how good they would have been in better light, and maybe less clouds.
But, I'm just jealous I wasn't there! :p

lol
It's a radio telescope, In the UK our mains electricity is at 240 volts not 110 as in the US. Therfore it has enough power to see through the clouds :D :D

:)
that's more or less what I meant
it's just an old saying when praising somebody or something which is great ...
'praise be to God'
the fact the scientist's etc were successful
saying it here (praise be to God) I was joking ...
after what CDS said
and Neil explaining the 'see through' clouds
like as in... 'it's a miracle' !

Neil... did you go into the visitor's center? There's a pair of parabolic dishes in there that are part of a working exhibit that really show the effectiveness of the dish shape... you need 2 people though, but well worth the entrance fee just for that... oh, and be warned i fell over laughing ;)
Nice pics.. i particularly like the last one... it shows the scale of the dish... which you can even see from the hills near delamere forest :O

Neil... did you go into the visitor's center?
I didn't get a chance to. I was at a meeting in Wilmslow that was due to end at around 15:00hrs which in the end finished at 17:00. All I could do was grab a few frames in the failing light. I will be heading up that way quite often now so will make a point of visiting.
Their web site is saying that the visitor centre is in the middle of a major re-furbishment so I may hold off untill that is completed.
So it's cloudy all the time eh neil_r?
Not really but it is a really unfair reputation that Manchester has with the rest of the UK, I mean have you ever seen the sun shining in a Lowry painting :D

Gotcha Marie!! I hope I wasn't coming off like I was attacking you or anything!! I was just trying to 'give praise' to the 'big brains' that engineered that incredible behemoth!

*quickly scours Google for "Lowry painting"*
Ah ha! Just looked at about 10 different paintings.....I see what you mean! Very early industy looking, and very 'gray skies' feel to them.
(sorry, I've never been to England so I was pretty ignorant on the "Manchester reputation"....."but now I know....and knowing is half the battle"!)

Let me know waht you think of it after you've visited? I found some interesting stuf fin there, but it seemed to be aimed at school parties... which is fair enough, but knowing that they're refurbishing might make a revisit worthwhile... especially i fthey keep some exhibits in tact ;)
Still like the pics :D It's a pretty impressive dish.

Wow. Pink Floyd is going to have to record another album so they can use your pic as the cover art.
