Well the Rallycross at Croft Circuit was cancelled last weekend because of the melting snow and danger of flooding, so I headed down to the Melbourne Airfield (at old WW II airbase) for the Lookout Stages Rally. Managed to meet up with Ian_H who was also down there.

Here's a few photographs from the day. To start with it was very dull, but by mid morning the sun had burnt the cloud off giving some lovely light. For shots 1 to 3 I was able to get nice and low on the exit of one of the chicanes used to slow the cars on the long straights and get a nice tight shot using my 300mm f4 L and 1.4 TC. Shot 4 was panned using my 70-200mm f4 L at 1/80 sec.

For a couple of the head on shots, maybe could have done with a slightly slower shutter speed to give a little more movement in the wheels.

Any constructive criticism would be gratefully recieved.

Cheers,

Simon.

Great shots.

Did you use a polarising filter with these shots ?

Great shots.

Thanks.

No, I didn't use a polariser. Both lens had UV filters on them, but nothing else. The shots were taken in RAW and then post processed using ACR and PS CS.

Cheers,

Simon.

With my car shots i always get glare off the windscreen, i thought you had used a polarising filter as glass is so clear and you can actually see the drivers in the background.

I spent quite a bit of time before the rally started and in between each stage studying the layout of each stage in relation to where the sun was going to be. I was trying to keep the sun behind me, but also slightly to one side so that it wasn't bouncing straight off the windscreen, and hopefully giving a bit of sidelighting through the side windows of the cars.

It's easier to do this on a SV rally like Melbourne, as it's very flat and open with no real trees etc around.

Cheers,

Simon.
