I'm looking for some recommendations.
I currently shoot with a 40D and a 20D. What I've found, though, is that I often want to have a camera with me, but not carry around my DSLR's.
A friend of mine has a G9, and it seems pretty impressive.
I'm just not too well versed in these things. I know I could read online reviews, but I'd really prefer to hear from "real world" users of "G" Series cameras.
Any and all help appreciated.
Thanks!

The pictures you get from a powershot G9 or G10 are lightyears ahead of most point and shoots. The cameras can also record in RAW, so solutions to tough AWB problems are lessened. I recently got a G10 and I am very impressed.

I'm shooting mostly with a 30D (if you don't count the 35mm film cameras) and will buy a G10 shortly. I, too wish to keep a camera with me, and I'm sold on the G10...just have to wait for the funds to build up a bit...
I also just bought my wife an A590IS for Christmas, and expect good things from that unit, too!
Regards!

I have had a G9 since March, and like it for all it's manual options, as well as it's size. I also have the Canon teleconverter (2x) and wide converter (.75), and like the expanded coverage they provide. However, it suddenly makes the G9 more like a small DSLR in terms of bulk to carry with you.
The G10 has appealed to many folks because of the wider lens, but also turned off some (like me) because of the shortened tele end. I tend to carry my G9 most of the time without bringing the tele or wide lenses to keep the package small.
You will most likely not like the image noise or reduced dynamic range or slower response time compared to your DSLRs, so be prepared for that.
Here is a single link that provides multiple links to G10 reviews. It can be convenient for one stop shopping on reviews.

Well said, Dennis. I bought a second hand G9 this weekend and while expecting a slower response time and reduced dynamic range, the noise is quite shocking. Really, anything over 400 is unacceptable, and that may be pushing it. That said, its a great carry along when you have enough light. At ISO 80, the image quality rivals my old Xti.

My G9 recently came up with a glitch, so it is in the shop. I am carrying around my older G7 right now. These are great cameras. As previously stated, the only real drawback is the noise at ISOs above 400, and even 400 ain't all that great. If you have plenty of light, they can be real workhorses.

+1. The noise is a real issue.

The main reason I'm looking for something smaller than my DSLR is for those times; like my company Christmas party last weekend, when it just would've been impractical to carry around either of my DSLRs.
This is some good info; appreciate it!

I'm in the same boat. Can't always carry my DSLR's so I needed a P&S. Had an SD300 & SD1000 that my wife destroyed (dropped one, laundered the other). I had been looking for a used G9 but just bought a new G10 for pretty much the same price (400CDN+txs).
