Hi, im new to the DSLR scene, i have a Canon 20D with 18-55 lens and an old Cosina 100-300 lens. I hate interchanging lenses, especially when travelling around, so i was considering the 28-300 lenses. Read up alot on the Tamron 28-300 xr di lens, but want some feedback on what u guys think. Also how good is it in comparison to Sigma

You could possibly consider the Tokina 24-200 as well, unless the telephoto end on that lens is not long enough for you.

Hey Jason, havent heard/read much on the Tokina, but thanks for the feedback. I am looking for a longer telephoto range. How's the Tokina lens?

Last year before I bought any of the glass in my signature I bought the Tamrom 28 - 300 xr di....I kept it for about 12 hours then took it back. The long end, 175 & up was awaful.

I have the Tamron and it is a great lens. It has it's shortcomings but unless you are shooting top shelf professional work it will get the job done. I had an older Sigma 28-300 and it worked well with my d60 but I had issuses when I upgraded to the 10D and 1D. I think that the Tamron is a better lens.

I use the Sigma 28-200 lens on my 20D. The lens works just fine. My wife uses the same lens on her issued Fuji S2 Pro. I laughed, until I looked at some of the images. Then bought my lens....There are, of course better lenses. But I havn't had any problems with mine.

I have the tamron and love it. Granted it is not as good as some out there, but for the price vs. my expectations it is well worth it for me.

Just FYI, here is a gallery I stumbled on with the Tokina lens

I have used the older versions of these lenses -the tamron 28-300XR (non Di) and sigma 28-300 (non macro-with the red ring).
Unfortunately i didn't have them at the same time and couldn't quite test the tamron XR properly anyway, but for what it's worth here are my thoughts.

They seemed to me to be very similar in optical performance.
Both got soft'ish at the long end, and were beaten in sharpness by a canon EF75-300.
At the short end they were both about as sharp as a canon EF28-80 (but i didn't compare precisely).
They were both amazingly well made. The lack of looseness in the zoom barrels easily beat most cheap consumer zooms.
Overall i was impressed by how well superzooms could go these days but concluded that they definitely wern't for me. All of the pics i got from them just weren't QUITE sharp enough in my opinion. Especially when you can get MUCH better results from a good midrange zoom pair like the 28-105/3.5-4.5 & 100-300 usm
