430II is about $300 (brand new), 430 is about $200.
Does 430II really do way better job than 430? I mean in the real world, not just comparing the hardware spec.
I don't own any Canon flashes before, 430 or 430II will be my first one, need suggestions.

If you have a Digic III or IV camera (40D, 50D, XSi, XS, etc) with the in-camera flash menu, that is reason enough to get the newer version.

If that isn't enough, here are a few more reasons:
1) Metal Hotshoe
2) Quick release mechanism
3) Silent recycle
4) Faster recycle
5) FEC adjusted in 1/3 stop increments
6) Nine Custom Functions (vs 6 on 430EX)

Thanks for the reply. I'll go to camera store and take a look at 430II today. Most likely I'll buy it.

To the OP, I see amazon has the 430II for 239. (430 for 199). Will probably pick up the 430II myself but is there any reason I should just purchase the 580II instead ($366 at amazon). I'm still learning and this will be my first flash but I tend to buy the best thats out there even if I don't use it to it's potential..

I got my 430II yesterday, cost me $315.
I tested it by using 50mm f1.4, P model, it can only do 1/60 high speed sync.
Question is a way to change it, say maybe 1/125 sec? Manual didn't say anything about how to change it.

When using your flash, always use manual mode on your camera and ETTL mode on your flash. The flash will automatically set the flash power for you.
