This post is on behalf of a friend of mine whose son is shortly off to Africa for 12 months and has asked for advice on a compact. I said the worst risk to any camera is probably dropping, seconded by rain/sand or falling in water, so something very rugged and waterproof is needed. I think I saw such a camera advertised, but I cant remember the brand. He is sensible enough to put price as a secondary issue, prefering to get the model most suitiable. Does any body have any experience of any model with these features? Thanks for any ideas.

I've read good things about the Olympus SW series.

Check out the Olympus Stylus line. I had one for a few months (until I lost it in the woods) and was very pleased with the photos I got with it. It takes really nice macros too.

One level up as far as ruggedness is concerned is the SeaLife DC800 (http://www.sealife-cameras.com/) which comes with a waterproof housing. The camera is intended for diving but can be used with or without the housing. It costs around $500.

Hope I don't get in trouble 'cause my first post is pushing non-canon gear, if Canon has something comparable please let me know.

Nate.
