Well, I tried this experiment, aiming to draw attention to the tree in the negative space. Didn't really care much about the rest of the image and didn't give it much thought. Next time I might try it out with some interesting content. C&C much appreciated.

I second your evaluation of the content. If you were trying to focus on the tree standing out from the shadow, I think you need to make it a bigger part of the image.

Hi Metalstrm - I like your thought process on this, and like Chauncey said I was drawn in also ;).
I took like the contrasting negative dark space vs. the highlight areas. How about a tighter crop and a B/W conversion - here is my interpretation. - Stu

Yes I like that interpretation! I plan to try the "technique" (if you wanna call it that) on some interesting subject. I think side lighting would create the perfect setting. Thanks for the encouragement :)

You're very welcome Kristian - glad to help. Hope you don't mind me playing around with your image.
Technique is something that evolves over time with people. You try something new, experiment, fail, flop, go down in flames...... and then hit something that really jumps up with a WOW factor! And I like your suggestion of side lighting. You are now talking strong, angle lighting with powerful contrast that can render some really nice images.
Here's an example of what I'm talking about:
