I just printed this image on a 12 x 18 poster at Costco ( Btw amazing quality print, and fairly cheap at $2.99).

However, at this size the blown out sky showing through the trees roughly in the center of image is hard for me to ignore.

I am not sure, though, how to fix it without it being obvious. Eg I tried selecting sky with a color wand and setting feather to different values, but depending on feather size either the border's too sharp or transition is too obvious; I wonder if there's a different technique all together.

Yeah it's a bit blown out there. Here are two suggestions:
1. Select t a rough rectangle around the blown out areas, then feather the selection (or try various effects like ratio etc..) to smooth the selection boundary. With some patience and zoomed in to 200% you can even deselect some twigs. Then create an a Exposure Adjustment layer from the selection. Adjust your exposure way down; then click OK. Then use the Opacity slider in the layers pallet to get the effect you want.
2. Reshoot; but shoot for an HDR. Or just shoot for the sky and one for the leaves then combine in PS.
