View Full Version : should I sell 20d for nokia camera phone?

I was at the park today and a girl with a really slick Camera phone made by nokia was taking some pictures of some ducks and I was just amazed at it's speed! I have loved the 20D so much but I think my loyalty may be leaning to getting a nokia camera phone for some of the nature and studio work that I have done. Does anyone have experience with the nokia camera phone? Will the noise be less at 3200 ISO then my 20D
Can I get the mirror to lock up on the nokia? The only thing that has got me very worried is that I'm not sure if they make a tripod for the nokia. Someone told me it had a PC slot so that would be good for hooking up with some lights. what do you guys think?

I think the volume buttons on the nokia control the 580ex ! Kind of like flash compensation. I think the only way to use the 580ex with the nokia is if you install the new hack that was designed by the canadians! They Canadians claim that it will shoot 10 fr per second. And the nokia supposedly will allow you to listen to your favorite telephone ring over and over while are taking pictures!! Man, this is great news.

Isn't it better to wait for Canon's new firmware ?
I heard they will support the long waited telephone functions now.

If you need any pictures of the wonderful Camera Phones I can send you a load.
Whilst shooting a wedding the other week. I was in a rather confined space and the other guests just would not leave. Just as I was taking a shot about a dozen hands would come into frame holding a bloody camera phone.
I hope the Bride and Groom will be happy with all the 0.5 MP pictures that their friends send them.

I think I'll get one. Recently, I've been taking many pictures with my 20D whilst driving to work, and it's just too darn troublesome to pull over. However, it's a little obvious to fellow commuters when you have your head hanging out the window looking through a camera at 60 mph. With this thing I can just pretend to be on the phone. Cool idea!
I did see that a phone company is releasing a 5+ megapixel phone camera. Hmmm.

There are places that will arrest you for using a phone when driving a car. Most of those same places have no specific laws against using a camera while you drive.
It seems to me it would make more sense to build a phone into a camera. Then, if you get pulled over, you can tell the nice officer you were just taking pictures and talking to your camera.

OK Somebody NEEDS to mount a 550EX on their camera phone. Then you can fire it off manually and everyone will think you've really got something.
Wonder if I can get a battery grip for mine...

Forget Nokia - look what's in Dpreview today:
CeBIT 2005: While it took the photographic industry several years before it produced the first 7 megapixel compact digital camera, the mobile phone industry is wasting no such time. Samsung has today announced a world first with the 7 million pixel SCH-V770 which, it has been reported, boasts manual focus, shutter priority, AE lock and an optical zoom as well as MP3 functionality and a business card reader. The SCH-V770, which can also take telephoto and wideangle converter lenses, is due to make its debut at CeBIT, Germany tomorrow
Hurry up and sell off your first-generation Drebels while you can still get something for them!

Don't you just love the camera phone users? They're so cute and innocent, they actually believe they are photographers, and they even upload some of their 'best' shots to photography sites for critique!
Sure, there's not much to compare with a D-SLR like 20D, the camera phone is just smaller, AND you can make a phonecall.
I can't wait for the day when they invent an apparatus like this:
- 64 megapixel
- 12-1200mm f/1.4 IS tilt shift zoom lens (integrated)
- ISO 50-12800
- integrated flash (guide number 58 )
- 17" foldable color touchscreen LCD display with an option of realistic 3D effect
- keyboard - foldable
- TV&Radio Tuner
- Computer (with lots of ram, disk space and cream and sugar)
- Phonecall capability (with video option, naturally), SMS per voice recognition
- up to 400 feet waterproof
- can be run over by an 18-wheeler (loaded) without damage
- weight: 700g
- size: fits in a pocket

I've been using my Camera phone for studio work,. I use it with a set of five JTL studio strobes,.
...but as I don't like to be tethered,. (I mean with a portable whats the point?) so I trigger them with a set of pocket wizards wirelessly. Some big quantum battery packs are enough to power the lights when I am roaming.. I use a three legged Donkey named "Gitzo" to carry all the extra weight and the custom light stand kit... he also has a 12volt power source to recharge the cell batteries.
I email all the photos to my server at home for PP work in photoshop. No memory card worries :)
Oh,. speaking of gitzo,. I find the 1500 series carbon fibre mountaineers to be my tripod of choice for the phone,. again we want to keep lightweight,.

Next month they will introduce 'strobe phones'. You set them up wherever you want to get the lighting, then you set up a conference call to take the shot.

No - Motorola has a pact with the devil^h^h^h^h^h^h^h^h^hN*kon. But it does handle aperture coupling with even the oldest N*kon lenses, which can't be said of the D70/D2H.

I heard there are plans of unlocking the firmware on the newest Sony erricsson camera phone to allow ISO 3200 and Mirror Lockup. Shweet. Hey Jackal what glue did you use to mount the 400mm? Mine just keeps falling to bits and when it does mount on right, I can't seem to make phone calls now without conkin' people over the back of their heads in the subway...

You guys are so wrong!
What's wrong with someone who cant afford a decent camera using their cameraphone to take pics?? It's not as if they think they're good quality, it's just an easy and very cheap way of getting a few memories on a memory card. I used to take heaps of pics on my Nokia 7610, they were pretty bad quality but it was fun and easy on a night out or at the pub to whip it out and snap away... then laugh at all the drunken pics taken the night before.
You should let up on the people who arent as 'specialised' as you lot. It sounds sad and makes you all look like a bunch of nerds turning their noses up at everyone else but themselves like arrogant to$$ers, which Im sure you're all not.
Ah, I feel better now... :)

HMMM....(clearing throat, standing up) I am sorry for the snobbery..   and I hereby promise to leave my XT at home whenever venturing in public where the other phones I mean cameras are at... It's unfair to not consider other people's feelings about there 'gear'.. and us folks who are soo wasteful as to want to take photos with umm.... cameras should be ashamed. We should also give everyone the same rights, even though there taking a picture with a cellphone it's still a valuable memory and completely worthy....So, i am going to go get my cellphone... and teach myself how to take pictures with it...

I had to get a camera phone because there were no other options in tri-modes. I've actually used it on purpose a couple of times. The pictures appeared quite useless until the doctor's appointment the other day. My otologist was impressed with my accidental pictures of my inner ear. Turns out I'm not really going deaf but just have a foam iPod headset stuck in there.....
So the camera phone isn't totally worthless.

Got a SonyEricsson W600i a while back. I was using it to take a few photos while out with a bunch of friends. Its kind of laid out like a camera (button and lens and such are where youd expect them to be) and the key pad is hidden. I had it on the table when my wife called. One of the folks at the table started laughing and asked why my camera was playing music. He was very suprised when it turned out to be a phone.
Sure they will never be the equal of a 20D or such, as much due to the size as anything, but I do see camera phones merging with the micro p&s digitals. I've had some suprisingly acceptable shots from mine.
