I took these shots last Saturday at the ceremonial start to the Iditarod sled dog race in Anchorage. The real race began Sunday and started a few miles up the road.

Waiting to run.

This musher is Jim Lanier. I know his family and root for him to do well. Each year he has placed higher in the rankings; last year 18th (each year there are about 80 dog teams). At the ceremonial start they have what are called Iditariders who ride along with the musher as they tour through Anchorage. These Iditariders are often sponsors that have paid for the priviledge. If you follow the Iditarod at all, please cheer for Jim. Maybe he'll finish even higher this year.

Thanks for the pictures, I like numbers 1 & 4. I also enjoy hearing and watching the Yukon Quest on the internet. The book " The Yukon Quest" was a good read.

Good shots. Love the dog truck with the holes that allow the pups to stick their heads out.

I love the first one. The second one is kind of funny, with the dogs sticking their heads out the holes on the truck. Great pictures!

Wow, nice shots MegaTrixel !!! You really captured the excitement and joy these dogs have for what they do ...
Sure wish I could be there ... I'm an avid follower (from afar) of the Iditarod and I've been following the race updates on the website.
Jim Lanier ... isn't he the one with all "blond" colored huskies?

Thanks Maz and Jessica!!:)
Reigh, yes I follow the Yukon Quest too. BTW, I hope you have visited the Yukon Territories. What an awesome place!
Mills and Lonnie, I agree, it looks cool when the dogs poke their heads through the holes in the dog carrier. I have a shot from last year that reminds me of the lead-in to the "Brady Bunch" (where the people are looking around at each other while the theme song is playing). In the shot, every dog in the truck has its head out and they're craning their necks to get a good look at one another.
CDS, wow it feels great to finally be first at something!
Jay, thanks. Yes! Jim's team is all white. They're the best looking team in the whole race IMO. One year, Jim wore all-white coveralls to match. Some years, Jim's wife Anna will mush their "B" team (younger dogs) to prep them for the following year's race.

You know you have to post that picture now, right? :D

Go, Jim! I like the last picture of the team running. What a great opportunity to get some neat photos.

Great shots and coverage of the Iditarod, James. We were thrilled last year to stop at Susan Butcher's place and observe some of her dogs in training. Most of us down here can't really comprehend the endurance required of both musher and dogs, or the emotional and physical drain. My best wishes for Jim to win or finish high, but to all of them to finish safely.

Lonnie,
Well I guess it wasn't quite as I remembered it. For one thing, it was a video and not a still picture. And for another, not "every" dog had its head and neck out. Oh well, here is an image from a video capture. I think I'll walk around next year looking for a true "Brady Bunch" moment.
