Hi there. Ivfe just taken a load of RAW images with my eos 300d and was wondering what i need on my computer to open them. I have photoshop 7 and various other software but none recognise the file. Does anyone know where to go and what to download to open these files?
Cheers in advance

Why are you shooting in RAW if you do not understand how to open them? Just curious. It would make more sense to crawl before you walk before you run. There was software provided with the camera that will open the camera RAW files. Use the CD. Also, you should be able to find the PS7 RAW plugin by searching Google.

the raw plugin for photoshop CS is free - I think the PS7 version needs to be purchased
I assume Canons Zoombrowser was included with camera on CD, that will convert RAW to other formats.
also theres a free RAW converter here

adebass,
For now just use the software that came with your camera,. it will do all you really need.

Or download RAW shooter (but only if you use an Intel proc in Windows XP)

Irfanview (maybe spelt that wrong) is a fast, free image viewer that understands RAW and CR2 once you apply the plugin pack.

Everyone, when taking RAW pics by my EOS 400D, the image's size is around 9 - 10 MB. As far as I know there's a way to extract this to reach 40 - 50 MB. Lots of thanks if someone could show me how.

When you open it in photoshop the save it as a TIFF the file will be 40-50MB. RAW files are losslessly compressed, and are encoded differently, that's why there small.

Another vote for the software that came with the camera. DPP should work fine and let you edit the raw and then transfer to photoshop.
I find the new DPP program to be really quite nice at converting, noise reduction, colors, etc.

It doesn't. I have DPP version 3.9.0.4 and I can view but not edit the RAW files from my canon PS95. I use RAW files all the time with PS4 and my 5D, but apparently PS4 is not compatible with the PS95. Any tips? TIA
Also, I just got off the phone with Canon support and they told me that I can not use DPP to read RAW files that are not saved to my hard drive. Because they are so large, I save the RAW images to an external drive. I was told DPP ONLY edits images on the hard drive. Not happy at all with this situation.

I have all my raw images on an external hard drive. DPP works for me.

What is the purpose of increasing the file size? I understand increasing quality, megapixels, image size, but file size in MB's?

Heh! This is an old thread...but,
First of all the PS95 is a new model, right? What software came on the disk for editing the Raw files? It should I believe be newer than what is publicly available. If I'm correct, then it would also mean that other Raw processing software would either be too out of date to support those files or at least need an update of the Raw processor. You mention "PS4" -- are you talking about Photoshop CS4? If so and if I'm correct about the S95 being a new model then you won't be able to open a Raw file in Camera Raw -- you would need to convert it to a DNG file first.
Now, as to DPP and the Raw files -- where are the files that you want to edit if not on a hard drive? And, again if you are using a version of DPP that is older than the camera, you will likely have problems -- again, the software that came on your disk is what you need to use.

That's a way old question, but I can answer your newer question:)!
Some stock agencies as well as some commercial printers ask for uncompressed tiffs and even a minimum file size for some purposes. For example, Alamy requires tiffs of a minimum uncompressed size for images submitted to qualify for their progam. I don't think the same requirements apply to images that then get posted on the site, though.

I have set up Eos Utility so that it uploads to an external hard drive. DPP has absolutely no problem with that arrangement at all.

I hate it when I get tricked into an old thread...
I get the tiff conversion, but I was confused by the way it was asked as if file size were the key over everything else.

And it wouldn't. I think the problem is not with an external drive. I'd say either out-of-date software or, maybe using some unconventional device? We'll have to hear back about this.

I will have to disagree on the run before you craw part. I think that he choose to take this because of the camera description in my case(Cannon Powershot S95) is "Raw: Image type for advanced adjustment on a computer." I'm not sure but I also think its a Lossless file. I did not know how to open RAW also. But better to take it in RAW and find out how to open them later, then to regret not taken it in RAW in first place.(I took mine in RAW+JPEG mode)
RAW Codec for Cannon can be found at:

Select your Operations System, then you OS Version.
