Hi,

I'd appreciate feedback on how I can improve. Here is a bison that I shot last winter in Yellowstone.

Thanks!

John

I like it, but the snippet of blue in the corner leads the eye away from the bison and out of the picture, so a tighter crop might be more effective.

The bison needs better separation from the background. A wider aperture might do it next time, or you could try some desat of the BG or selective blurr. Also the crop should leave more room at the left if possible.

If you turn image editing on (UserCP options, upper left corner) folks could post images showing you some suggested changes.

Like SwingBopper said it would look much nicer with the background being more out of focus. It makes it a little hard for the eye to only look at the Bison the way it is... however other then that I think its a beautiful shot. Its got potential.

That's a great looking bison! Too bad you shot it ...

I never photograph wildlife, so my advice should have little weight, but I think I would have placed it differently in its environment. Add a bit more room to move and get an idea of not JUST A bison, but THAT PARTICULAR bison.

Good idea. If you could get it to CHARGE you with eyes wide, nostrils flared and steamy breath pouring out, then you've got THAT Bison! Hopefully you've got life insurance too. Ok a bit dramatic; but Wem has a good point.

As is, I think the picture looks like a snapshot. Too much DOF and placed bang in the middle. It is a very interesting subject, and the bison looks somehow angry. I think the subject had some great potential (too bad about it being shot :().

It looks like you shot this between 11 and 1. I think that is your biggest issue. Too much light to really stop down. Plus, it is on a road, so it is a bit unnatural. It is well composed, but the time of day could be better.

Judging from the shadow, I think it was later in the afternoon. Or earlier in the morning. If you had gotten him to turn to the right, and you moved to keep him in profile, the light would have been more advantageous. However, I do not recommend trying to give posing tips to this particular subject.

Thanks for all the great advice.

I took this around 11 am, and from a vehicle. Next time, I'll try to get out in front and anger him a bit :) Someone else will have to post, though :)

A tighter crop seems better to me. I notice his eye in this one. Here is the tighter crop and original image.

Thanks again for all your comments :)

tighter crop looks much nicer. Wicked horns on that guy.

The tighter crop is way cooler :) I would try slightly burning in his rightmost foot because it looks a bit white.
