Greetings! I have been looking at digital cameras (extensively!) and have narrowed it down to either a Canon G1 or a Pro90 is. I've seen photos taken by both and I'm impressed. But I'm also undecided... I like the Pro90's larger lens and greater focal length; also the image stabilization. But I'm a little concerned about the lower resolution, and for that reason wonder if the G1 might be a better selection? Any comments or observations would be much appreciated!

The 10x lens was the selling point for me. The Pro90's 2.6 megapixels (1856x1392 pictures) is a compromise between 3.3 and 2.1. I figured I could live with 2.6 because of the 10x optical lens with image stailization. I'm moving up from a 1.1 megapixel camera. I think it depends on how large you want to make your prints. So far I print mostly 4x6 for myself and friends. I've printed one at 8x10 on my old Epson Stylus Color 800 using Epson glossy paper. It looks good. Probably would be better on a new printer or a photo printer.
I like the electronic viewfinder on the Pro90. I rarely use the LCD display (mostly for playback). The viewfinder is through-the-lens with no parallax (I think it's really another video screen). Not sure what the G1 has. Can you go to a store and try both?

Hi,
Actually, the only one available at local stores is the Pro90. I like the electronic viewfinder too (essentially, I guess, it works like an SLR - except that it's lit up!). I know some folks don't like it, I think the reason why I do is because my bifocals make traditional viewfinders a little more difficult to use. For some reason, I seem to be able to focus on the electronic one better... I understand the G1 has a traditional viewfinder, not the electronic variety. But I'm honestly more concerned with image quality than with any of the cameras' "amenities" (or how they're presented). It can be big and clunky, or ugly as sin, and if it takes good pictures that's the one for me! :)

Apart from the zoom lens, there was another overriding reason I bought the Pro90: There is no exposure indicator in manual mode through the optical viewfinder on the G1 - you'll have to use the LCD. With the pro90, the entire EVF display brightens or darkens based on your settings which I think is even better than the exposure indicator (that shows up in the Av or Tv modes).
Hope this helps.
