This is NOT a simple answer. This type of thing takes a whole lot of experience.

Why does this post seem like deja vu to me? I'm sure there was a similar post while back with the exact same picture. Or am I really loosing it now? :confused:

Theres several hours and several hundred steps in Photoshop to do things like that well and no two tutorials will use the same methods. In simple terms the four images (girl, pattern, violin,girl) images in the second shot have been added on four seperate layers and selectively masked to allow part of the underlaying layer to show through the layer stack. The hard part is getting the masks right and soft enough at the edges so that it looks right and yet retaining detail like the hair.

The process involves placing each separate image on a different layer with a gradient mask, placing them where you want and removing the excess. You can find the technique in Photoshop CS For Digital Photographers by Scott Kelby.
