Amazing...

SEOUL (Reuters) - Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. unveiled the world's first mobile phone with a powerful 7-megapixel camera on Wednesday, providing a potential competitive threat to manufacturers of digital cameras.

Samsung has been stepping up development of increasingly sophisticated phones for high-end users looking to access games, music and movies on their handsets. It launched the world's first 5-megapixel phone in October.

But while top digital camera makers such as Japan's Canon Inc. and Sony Corp (NYSE:SNE - news) (news - web sites). are likely to see the model as a new threat, its popularity may depend on how much of an improvement the camera can deliver over existing units.

There is a growing consensus among consumers that 3 or 4 megapixels, the measure of how many million picture elements are captured in a digital snapshot, are enough for a decent shot.

Some of the best-selling digital cameras feature 4 or 5 megapixels.

The new phone, which also has an MP3 player and business card reader, would go on sale as early as the first half, though a price had yet to be set, Samsung said in a statement.

Samsung aims to sell 100 million mobile phones this year, up 16 percent from 86 million sold last year.

The SCH-V770 phone will make its international debut at CeBIT, the world's biggest tech and telecoms trade show, in Hanover, Germany on Thursday.

Shares in Samsung, Asia's most valuable technology company with a market value of $81 billion, ended down 0.4 percent at 500,000 won, versus a 0.85 percent rise in the broader market.

Leaving aside the whole question of whether I'd want to have anything to do with this Frankenphone...

I suspect the "7 megapixel" phone/camera is actually 3.5 megapixels, interpolated to 7 mp.

Maybe I'm wrong. But I've seen too many news stories/press releases touting inexpensive 5 mp cameras which are really 2.5 mp and 2x interpolation, and 12x zooms which are really 3x with a hefty dose of digital zoom tacked on.

There is a big problem arising out of the proliferation of camera phones and it is about to hit the manufacturers in a big way. They are being banned in the same places that cameras are - school sports events, kids plays, swimming pools etc.

The problem is that a lot of manufacturers now only make phones with cameras and the consumer has no choice other than to have one. Can you imagine all those parents going to watch their kids swimming tournament having to leave their phones at the door. Some music venues are doing the same, as some models will record sound and video.

The brown stuff is about to hit the fan in a big way.

I'm amused - you'd think they were taking the pacemaker away from a heart patient . . .

Wether its true 7MP or not it dont matter because the censor has gotta be small to fit in a small phone (im pretty sure its a flip, so its really thin) so there isnt much room for a nice sized censor, so the images prolly have a hell of alot of noise and terrible quality compared to even a P&S at the same MP value. In terms of it replacing a convetional cam is redicoulus because think of storage. It would require an SD card bay in order to expand storage (Images can range from 1meg to 4megs with jpeg) and so it would be more of a PDA then a phone, so people would rather buy a PockeyPC or somethin more versatile.

And when it does, I'll want to be there with my own camera phone and my longest lens.

When the multi-mega pixels mobiles are mainstream, full frame dslr will be priced at consumer level.

Secure Digital now has out mini SD cards for mobile devices. :P The only size I've seen is 256MB.

Actually, the phone looks very much like (and most likely is) the Samsung equivalent of something like an S-70. So it actually is a P&S ... and there are lots of people buying 7 MP P&S cameras.

It's a lot easier to fit mobile phone functionality into a camera than vice versa (Hell, you can have a PCMCIA mobile phone card for your laptop  ).

Best regards,
Andy

Haven't we gotten to the point where the average person sits up and says this has all gone way to far? When else does a parent want to use a camera if not at a childs sports event? I know there are problems of paedophiles, but really, what is stopping them taking kids fully dressed and in public going to save the world from?

And if they're going to try to ban cameras, they ought to start with local government-owned cameras that seem to be popping up all over the place. Who needs big brother watching them in their daily routine?
