I've been thinking of one for a travel camera - the iin is a beast to lug around on holiday. I've also considered the Sigma...

Yeh, 1dmkiin is a nice camera but at 1.6kgs just for the body don't want to be taking it 'everywhere'

Why im considering G10.

Slightly cheaper and you could pick up from last one?
Let me know if you get it!

I bought a G10 and took it with me to the office Christmas party held at a local restaurant. I never would have bothered toting my 40D, but the G10 took very nice pictures, far nicer than the P&S I had been using. You buy one to put in your pocket (a rather large pocket) and have with you. Many good pictures are missed because you did not want to lug all the gear along. It's the same reason I got a Tamron 18-270 VC. It cover all the focal lengths, eliminating a bag full of (heavy) glass.

Yeah, thats the main reason I want one, but just thinking (stop being lazy and just take my DSLR's) and save for more glass..

I have the mark IIN and the G10. It's always nice to have a P&S ready when I don't feel like lugging the IIN around. If you can afford it, i'd get it or at least a cheaper P&S you can fit in your pocket.

I picked up the G10 from JB HIFI last weekend, the shelf price was $750, and I got asked for the best price and they dropped it to $620.

It looks like a great camera and i echo the idea that it would be a really great travel camera. I do however think that it would not even come close to beating my 400d/17-40F4L which is my current travel camera. I could buy a 17-85IS for about £200 less than a G10 and still have a more capable camera. In reality the 400d with a small lens is no less portable than a G10. So if you have a 400/450 body then maybe choose this route over the G10.

I might consider going to see my brothers friend at JB HI FI, can get anything there for cost price, so if the price is good enough i might consider purchasing one after saving

How about a used XT/XS and a kit lens or a nifty fifty?

No doubt Canon's G series is one of the most prestigious non-DSLR line of products and surely I have a G10, love it too, but compare to older brothers and sisters, it is a pity that large LCD here is not mobile that to me was a big plus for say shooting over heads in crowd or from a very low angle. Other than that it is an excellent choice, considering it gives you a lot more with your sophisticated flashes of 5xxEX series such as very high synch option.
No I don't thick of it as bulky at all (As long as you have used to your 1Ds).

Put it this way. You can skip the G10 and keep saving for more glass, or take the G10 as more glass! I mean, think of it as a stabilized 28-140 f/2.8-4.8 that is so cool that it doesn't need a camera to shoot with! As a travel camera it looks fantastic, I'm saving as much as I can to get one.

I just picked up a G10 for use when I don't feel like carrying a DSLR. Not expecting it to match my other stuff but I wanted something I could carry around without needing a backpack/camera bag. I got it for 399$CDN.

To answer your question with the shortest possible answer, "No", it isn't. ;):D

The problem with G10 is that you need really really big pockets for it.
And for me it defeats the purpose of p&s.

p.s. Look into other cameras too. like Panasonic LX-3

i'd rather stick to canon :)

I had a G10 and sold it after 2 months. Bought the lx3 and couldnt be happier. Smaller by far and just better image quality all round.

I still have my G10 and used it yesterday with my 430EX flash at a party, i just have to say that it's an insanely capable combo. The pics came out great, i really really like the G10. It's a huge shame that i am thinking of letting it go because of the size..

I don't know what i am gonna do, maybe i'll just stick to it, atleast for now!

Jim Askew just got one recently and loves it. I know he keeps that with him all the time just in case. But I have my 5D with me when I think about doing any picture taking and I don't regret that. Otherwise, it's the little SD850 for me, fits in a pocket. The G10 is too large for that, unfortunately.

I just bought one tonight, self christmas gift, and I"m thinking/very much hoping it's worth it for me to get. Usually I have to carry around a D2x and camera bag to store it in if I want any kind of images, and that isn't a combo that is exactly easy to carry around. It's big and bulky and attracts attention. So for things like concerts or parties where I'm there not to do photography but I want to get som enice images as well, or just out with friends or on travel and cant' carry a bulky camera (relative term..for me bulky=pro body), then the g10 seems like a perfect solution to me.
