I think this may be a new feature in CS only but you can now do healing and clone tool corrections on a new layer. Just do a Layer>New Layer. Click that layer to make it active and do the healing and cloning on that layer. That makes it easy to click it on and off to see the before and after or to dump that layer if you make a hash of it.

The beauty is you can add more than one layer and try different clones and then just erase or turn off the one you like least.

I have started to make virtually all my adjustments on layers. In addition to the advantages you mentioned, you can adjust the intensity of the change by adjusting the opacity of each layer and you have greater control over where in the image or the selection the adjustment is applied by using a layer mask. It's taking me along time to learn CS, but it's a pretty incredible tool.
I suggest Photoshop CS for Digital Photographers by Scott Kelby.

Scott

If any one is like me and struggling to get this tip to work you need to have "Use all Layers" checked on the options bar.See below......

"Select Use All Layers in the options bar to sample data from all visible layers. Deselect Use All Layers to sample only from the active layer"

Thanks for the great tip...
