Recently got a Canon 350D + Sigma 24-135MM F2.8-4.5, just been playing around while it's miserable and dark over here in the UK...

Shot at 135MM ISO 800, I don't know if the EXIF data is still there or not did a little PP in photoshop.

Flash fired, I used a homemade diffuser (tissue paper round the flash, attatched with a rubber band)

The lighting looks OK in the first shot, but the second shot is rendered a little too dark.
Coupling that with your high ISO setting (yes, your EXIF is preserved in the file), the noise may well be a problem in some of the tonal regions - for example, in the darker part of the wall.

Noise may go unnoticed, because noise in digital images is quite different to grain in film images. About the only sure way to know whether the noise is really noticeable or not is to try the same shot at a much lower ISO (100) and see if you can tell the difference.

As a general rule, the combination of high ISO and underexposure is to be avoided.
