So it appears she's done a nude cover shoot for GQ.
http://news.yahoo.com/nphotos/GQ-magazine-Jennifer-Aniston-tanned-body-actress-Jennifer-Aniston/photo//081211/482/1563d5668f8a44de9221d3ed6a05f610//s:/ap/20081211/ap_on_en_tv/people_jennifer_aniston
She's an attractive girl, no doubt. But man...is that a goofy looking pose or what? I'd like to hear some other's opinions on that pose and see if anyone else sees what I am seeing?

It is a goofy pose but she has that smile/look/cuteness to pull it off in my opinion. For me it's akward but sexy and she is just stunning!

i dont like the way her hands are.. it loks like she should go diving or something like that.
but overall i do like the photo, and she is stunning as always.

I love the lighting and the sharpness - those are the ONLY THINGS I love about the cover shot.

Funny you started this thread as I just saw a copy in the local newspaper and the first thing I noticed was the hands looked so unnatural. Liked everything else though.
I've become a stickler for hand positions when shooting nudes. It has to look elegant and natural.

I'm wondering if, since it's known to be her first nude, if they were shooting for an innocent-looking pose.

I think she actually did another nude (or near nude) about a year ago for some magazine cover, didn't she?
Ok...here's my take on this pose and the way her hands are positioned- and please understand, I am not a shrink, nor am I one to delve off into analyzing stuff like this, but ever since her break up with Brad Pitt (which really had to suck for her), in my opinion, she came out looking like the 'needy' one...dumped, humilated, etc. And as do a lot of 'stars' they seem to need or thrive on attention.
So do this real quick, where you are sitting at right now - strike a pose with your hands similar to that of a dog 'begging' for attention or a treat.
That was like the first thing I saw when I came across this shot.
But then, that's just me.

It may also be a bunny pose, as in Playboy Bunny. There will probably be a clue in the article, should anyone get past the cover.

To me, it just looked like a way to cover her nipples without using the dreaded hand-bra.

She did a nude scene in a movie a few years ago too. It had the Jake kid from Broke Back Mountain. Terrible movie...

looks to me like it's just her way of holding onto the ends of the tie. Doesn't bug me.

I actually like it. There's too much good going on for me to notice the placement of her hands.

hands huh? Hadn't really noticed. But I am with Ronald she doesn't look unnatural she's just holding her tie. Like she is about to tie it.

I agree with the "avoiding the hand bra" comment, GQ doesn't want a wrapper like they put on a Playboy or Penthouse after all....

Shot isn't bad, don't like the hands at all though. Doesn't look natural.
And it's funny how the media is bashing on her for doing this.

^^^ That's what I was thinking, just taken as she was playing with the tie
Sometimes it's easy to be a little too critical of the posing....now, why is no one commenting on the blown highlights and lack of seperation from the background ;)

This will probably irk some people that use similar poses but NOTHING ruins a glamor shot for me like unnatural posing to cover body parts. If you don't want to (can't) do the nudity then don't do it, or have hair cover the breast or something but these silly shots where everything is perfect except the model just has her hands over her nipples look terrible... but I see them all the time.

Somehow, I just don't think a fully dressed Jennifer Aniston would sell as many magazines.

The bunny hands don't bother me, as it looks like someone caught in "mid-tie" I'm not a huge fan of the light wrap from the blown background. What is even more odd is she doesn't look like herself. Her face has some very flattering angles, and some other that exaggerate some of her features, like her chin. The cover photo, plus the one with her an the guys, don't capture her face in the most flattering way.

The operative words being "for me". I think as photographer's, we tend to over analyze the technical aspects and supposed "rules".
If you google her and GQ you'll find hundreds of references to it, and I bet not one comments about the position of her hands.
Sometimes the pictures are about the subject, and the emotion the image evokes, not about the photographic merit, and that's what makes successful photogs successful.

I will have to say, being the OP here, that when I browse through the G/N section here on POTN, I am probably one of the last people to 'knit-pick' little detail stuff. I always chuckle when I read someone comment how it 'bothers' them to see a slightly turned ankle or how someone's ear lobe 'doesn't work' for them.
So it is ironic to me that I would have even noticed this. No doubt, Aniston is a fine looking woman and the over all picture is quite flattering. In other words, the shot of her is rather pleasing to the 'male eye' for sure.
But as I said, what struck me first about this was I have felt bad for her the way she came out in the whole Brad/Jolie fallout and I just had this hunch that Hollywood egos, being what they are, that perhaps she might be needing some affirmation. So I didn't see her hand position as a way to cover up her nipples/breast, persay; rather it was just that 'begging dog' image that stood out to me.
(waiting now for some one to admit they would be willing to 'throw her a bone') ;-)

IMHO, her facial expression doesn't support that theory.

The hands are a little forced for my taste.
But all I see is a naked Jennifer and "Go Eats"....what ever that means. 8-√

+1. Egads, the hand-bra is unattractive and cliche. The idea here is a good one--she's "tying" a tie and therefore the coverage of the nipular areas is "incidental." But the execution is pretty rough. I'm assuming her expression, lighting, pose and whatnot came together here in a way they didn't in the other outtakes, and therefore they were willing to overlook her strange hand positioning. Either that, or a more natural hand positioning, ie actually tying the tie, looked even more awkward or made her hands look unattractive.
For the record, I'd like to say I wouldn't mind having shot this image of Aniston... :)

IMVNSHO, going in to this shoot everyone involved knew that it would be one of the most talked about series of images taken all year (sad, huh?)...
But photo-snobbishness aside, I just feel like those hands are inexcusable, especially for a cover. Completely distracting and not attractive to Jennifer's image. Some of the other shots (like between the two guys) flows artistically and beautifully. This 90 degree lassie shot is not working for me.
It really began bothering me when I started thinking about the steps that go in to tying a tie and the many forms the tie and our hands take...so many missed shots of clever placement, WITH a very ascetic look.
I think I'll contact her publisher and ask to reshoot her. :D

ha...yeah the hands look puppy doggish..but I really can't complain about it. lol. My work isn't on the cover of GQ lol...
However, I shot just lastnight a girl who wanted to do an American Flag tie pose for her hubby in Iraq. Wish I could show you all in a post, but she made me vow to never let them out. lol They were a little more seductive than the GQ ones too. lol. It seems women loved that cover though...she wasn't the only female I know who loved the Jennifer shoot.
